OS in Big Organizations II: Failures, Success Stories & Best Practices

Please join us for the second session of the “OS in Big Organizations” meet up series and get a technical and project management perspective on how to make a OpenSource project more successful. You can learn from failures and success stories of recent initiatives from our speakers and leave the session being more comfortable to start a new OS project or improve an existing one! Let's share our insights and collaborate to make OS initiatives in bigger organizations a bigger success!

We started off the series with a high level perspective on this topic. This time, we will get more technical while still having the managerial perspective in mind - as innovations need good management and strong commitment to be a success! The 3 speaking slots will be filled with experienced speakers sharing success stories, failures und best practices of OS initiatives. Zach Chandler: How Enterprise Leverages Open Source (Web Strategist at Stanford University, Principal at Ambergris Consulting)

Zach Chandler, web strategist, vendor liaison, and Drupal evangelist at Stanford University will uncover Stanford's engagement with the Drupal community, how the enterprise leverages open source, and what we gain by bringing open source software, and ways of working, into large scale implementations. Topics will include a brief history of Drupal product initiatives, and what we stand to gain by thinking like Product Designers.  

Tools Team: How to use GitHub to best support developers (SAP Labs)

The Tools Team at SAP (represented by Ben Boeser, David Farr & Dominik Tornow) explores their challenges, successes, and learnings from their pursuit of Open Source initiatives at SAP. Topics covered will include the promotion of GitHub and social coding, overcoming bureaucratic obstacles, and a brand new OS initiative – ReviewNinja. Focus will be placed on the team’s speciality, design and implementation of the tools and processes that best support developers.

Mark Hinkle: Things I Learned about Open Source The Hard Way (Citrix)

Mark Hinkle runs the Citrix Open Source Business Office and has spent 20 years working with open source communities and delivering open source software. Topics covered in this presentation will include the benefit of his mistakes and successes both in evaluating open source ad an end-user and in delivering enterprise solutions based on open source software.


The meet up will take place in the beautiful SAP campus in Palo Alto, more specifically in the Cafeteria of Building 3. Feel free to bring your laptops, we will provide seating & tables.
