Do you need a break in your workweek? Does the thought of hiking along the beach and adjacent hills brighten your spirits? Then join us for the Playa Del Rey conditioning walk. Afterwards we will stop by a local restaurant for refreshments (MO’s). The walk is 5 miles round trip, with about 200 ft gain and loss. Directions to meeting point: Go West on Culver Blvd, to Nicholson, turn Left (Note: Nicholson turns into Pershing) and continue on Pershing to Waterview (1/2 mi), turn Right to top-of-the-hill, (corner of Rindge and Waterview). Where the NW corner fence of LAX meets the homes overlooking the ocean. You an also get there from Manchester as well. Easy access to the starting point is also possible from Manchester Ave. and from Vista Del Mar. The fun starts at 7:00pm. Rain Cancels. No dogs, please. Two months 21 days until summer officially starts Join us to the tallest point in the Santa Monica Mountains, Sandstone Peak (3111ft). We’ll take the scenic Mishe Mokwa loop trail. Along the way we’ll encounter other popular spots such as Balance Rock and Split Rock. Mileage: 6.5 miles round trip Elevation gain: 1,600 ft. Length of time: 5 hours including lunch, and breaks. End time should be around 2pm. Bring: ten essentials, shoes with good traction, 2 to 3 liters of water, windbreaker, sun protection, snacks, lunch, your camera and your sense of adventure. Please layer accordingly Restrooms are available at the parking area before the trail head. We will be meeting at 8:00 am at Malibu Civic Center Library for ride share. If lot not available, park on the street. From Pacific Cost Hwy, N on Webb Way, R on Civic Center Way. If you are planning to meet us at the trail head, meet up time is 9:00 am. Once you pass Circle X Ranch on your right hand side on Yerba Buena Rd, the Sandstone Peak trail head will be a mile away. Trail head parking is on the left-hand side in a dirt lot. Please be advised that cell reception is spotty at best. If you are running late, I will not be able to respond if you send a message. Explore one of America’s Newest National Parks with the 20s & 30s Section of the Angeles Chapter Sierra Club! Join us as we hike and camp at Pinnacles National Park! Campground: Pinnacles Campground is accessed only from the east side of the Park as there are no connecting roads between the two entrances of Pinnacles. Each campsite has picnic tables, a fire ring, and nearby water spigots. Oak trees provide shade many campsites. Coin-operated showers and a dump station are available. There is also a swimming pool in the campground that is typically open from middle of April through the end of September, depending on the weather trend. Lastly, there is a nearby camp store, open daily from 9:30 am until 4:30 pm. We have limited parking available at the campground, averaging three people per parking spot. Parking spots will be allocated to carpools of three or more per vehicle, then, space permitting two or more per vehicle. Overflow parking is available. Food: Many meals and beverages are provided on this trip! Breakfast burritos, juice, coffee, trail lunch featuring deli meat sandwiches, potluck dinner featuring spaghetti and meatballs, salads, s’mores, and a grab and go breakfast will all be provided to participants! What’s Included: The trip fee will cover the campsites, food (as mentioned above), warm dish water with dish soap, and a few other basic amenities. Group Chores: We ask that each participant help out around camp and mealtimes. Tasks will include helping to prepare the meals, helping to clean dishes, and taking trash from our campsite to the dump area. Each participant will be able to sign up for their preferred task(s). Itinerary: Friday: Arrive any time after 1:00pm on Friday, June 7thand any time before 9:00am on Saturday, June 8th. After arriving at camp, you can set up camp, explore the campground, stop at the Visitor Center, prepare your own dinner, and gather around for a campfire once it gets dark. Materials for s’mores will be provided once the campfire gets going. Saturday: We’ll have a 7:30am wake up followed by breakfast burritos, coffee, and juice. We will also prepare our trail lunches (sandwiches and fruit), before heading out on our hike at 9:00am. We’ll carpool to the Bear Gulch Day Use Area where we will start our 5.5-mile hike. We will be hiking the High Peaks Trail to Condor Gulch through the heart of the Pinnacles rock formations. We will then take the High Peaks Trail for about 2 miles, complete the “Steep and Narrow Section”, and continue towards Tunnel Trail (0.7 miles). We’ll then join with the High Peaks Trail for about 0.6 miles before returning on the Condor Gulch Trail for about 2.0 miles and reuniting with our vehicles. If we’re lucky, we will see some California Condor flying overhead! After our moderately strenuous hike, we will return to camp and freshen up. Our pot luck dinner featuring spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread, salad, and more(!) will be served around 5:00pm. We’ll enjoy another campfire and s’mores complete with lots of laughs. Please Bring Your Own Beverages (BYOB). Sunday: We’ll have an 8:00am wake up and a more “grab and go” type breakfast will be provided (bagels, muffins, coffee, juice, fruit). Participants will pack up camp and can either head back to home or stay for an optional hike to the Bear Gulch Reservoir (approximately 2.5 miles roundtrip). Bring your cameras!
