Towsley Canyon Wonderland Hike

It's only 5 miles and 1200 ft elev gain, but you get to see so much in such a short trip. This is one of L.A.'s best kept hiking secrets.

You'll go through a tree lined canyon, past two areas of geological activity (with bubbles in at least one of the spots), up to an overview of the Santa Clara River Valley, through a narrow slot canyon that can require some rock hopping in the spring, and then walk out through a pleasant meadow.

Along the way, there's also a few places of historical interest.

Bring: comfortable shoes, a liter of water, sunscreen/sun protection, a snack for the viewpoint, and a good attitude.

There is one very significant climb to the overlook and one short area where water flow hopefully will require rock hopping. Our goal is to finish by noon, so we'll try to go at a decent pace on the climb.

Thanks for another crackerjack hike at a beautiful locale that has managed to evade the grimy grip of the ever-expanding city. It was a delight.

sounds fun... on a scale of 1-10 what does this hike rate in difficulty?

    March 29, 2013

    • Jose M.

The first mile is 3-4, second mile 6-7, third mile 4-5, then downhill about 3-4, then 2-3 the last mile or so.

    Two points.
    First: sorry but no dogs.
Second, there is a chance of rain at this point. I will be sending out an email Saturday regarding whether we will go forward or not to all known participants. Please keep an eye out for it.

I have the same question as Jody - are dogs allowed?
I looked at the park's website (http://bit.ly/11DGaOd) and it looks like they are allowed in the park; just not sure if they're allowed to join the group...?
