Palisades Stairs and Canyon Urban Hike

Everyone knows about the stairs at Fourth Street and Adelaide Drive in Santa Monica, some even know about the wooden ones near Seventh Street. Not everyone knows about the secret network of stairs on the opposite side of Santa Monica Canyon in Pacific Palisades.

This hike will take you on an approximately 5 mile, 2 hour tour of these stairs in Santa Monica Canyon. There is about 800 feet of elevation gain (and loss and gain) through the hike, so bring comfortable shoes.

A hat and about a quart/liter of water are good things to have, too.

Afterwards we will meet for a light lunch at Patrick's Roadhouse in Santa Monica Canyon, famous as Arnold Schwartzenegger's hangout before he was famous.

I am limiting this hike to 12 participants because unlike on the Santa Monica side, the Palisades stairs are less used and go past private homes. Also the streets are generally narrower, with no sidewalks.
Therefore, if you find you cannot attend, please remove your name so someone on the waitlist can sign up. I hope to see you all at the hike, it's fun, interesting and beautiful. A natural gem in the city.
We meet at the low wall in Palisades Park where San Vicente meets Ocean Ave. I will have a white straw hat and a red daypack.

I'm new to hiking. The 800 elevation gain scares me a bit. Should I cancel?

I don't think so. It's spread out across the whole hike. There's one long up near the beginning, but we rest in the middle and afterwards, and again at the end. It's not my goal to strain anything on anybody, particularly me, but on my hikers, too. I can't have you say it was a death march, now, can I? ;) You'll do fine.

I look forward to tomorrow's hike and meeting all of you. This area is beautiful and interesting. We'll see the second house of
Roy Jones, the son of the Founder of Santa Monica, who was the first President of Bank of Santa Monica, the home of Lee Marvin and Johnny Weissmuller, the street with two names, the site where Charles Laughton's house used to be, and also a 20's drinking club founded by Will Rogers. As for parking, park on one of the residential streets south of San Vicente. There it's free. If you park on San Vicente or on Ocean Ave. you have to pay the meter, and compete with the joggers and sightseers in the park. It'll be a fun hike, and I'll get you back before noon.
