This Friday we'll have two talks followed by drinks.

Our industrial speaker is Balaji Chandran: project architect in the Social Technology team of KLM. He will talk about how KLM powered social media operations using bots, AI and machine learning.

The academic speaker is Krisztian Balog: full professor at the University of Stavanger where he leads the Information Access & Interaction research group. He will talk about research that aims at assisting users in their work with tables.

Program:

16:00 - 16:30 Krisztian Balog

Balaji Chandran - Powered by bots

KLM has one of the largest social media operations in the world. Customers can reach KLM through Facebook, Twitter or through a messaging app Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat. They are engaged by a team of 270+ FTEs 24x7 in 10 languages. Since the introduction of private messaging channels the volume of messages have tripled. To keep up with the growing message volumes and increasing customer expectations, KLM automated parts of the conversation. In this presentation we will see how KLM powered social media operations using bots, AI and machine learning.

Balaji Chandran is a project architect in the Social Technology team of KLM, that builds the IT systems behind KLM Social Media (and messaging platforms) operations. Part of his role is to find how to bring the best of technology to solve business problems. Besides joining this team 2 years back, he's been with KLM for the last 9 years in various departments in similar roles.

Krisztian Balog - SmartTables: Supporting Work with Tables

Tables are a powerful, versatile, and easy-to-use tool for organizing and working with data. In this talk, I will present a line of research that aims at assisting users in their work with tables. One type of support concerns finding related tables that are already "out there" on the Web. Another type of support, which is the main topic of this presentation, is to equip spreadsheet programs with smart assistance capabilities. In particular, we introduce and focus on two specific tasks for relational tables: populating rows with additional instances and populating columns with new headings. This work is done in collaboration with Shuo Zhang.

Krisztian Balog is a full professor at the University of Stavanger where he leads the Information Access & Interaction research group. He received his PhD from the University of Amsterdam, and worked as a postdoc at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), before joining the University of Stavanger. His general research interests lie in the use and development of information retrieval, information extraction, and machine learning techniques for intelligent information access tasks. His current research concerns entity-oriented and semantic search, and novel evaluation methodologies. He serves as a senior programme committee member at SIGIR, CIKM and ECIR, as an Associate Editor of the ACM Transactions on Information Systems, and as a current and former coordinator of information retrieval benchmarking efforts at TREC and CLEF.
