"Photography for Stock Photo Suppliers"

Who has not thought about selling at least some of their images as stock photos?  On January 21, 2014 Justin Horrocks will talk to us about "Photography for Stock Photo Suppliers"

Brief History of Justin's path to full time stock photographer:

• Started earning .10 cents per download (royalty free license sales)

• First $100 earned around March 2004.

• With minimal effort, started earning $100/month by end of 2004.

• 2005 - “The Light” goes on - more effort = more sales.  Prices at iStock rising, artist exclusivity offered with promise of higher royalty earnings.  Game on.

• 2007 - received “quit your day job” email from iStock, announcing acquisition by Getty Images and promise of higher earnings.  I quit my day job.

• 2008 - purchase commercial space and converted to photo studio and started producing images like crazy.

• 2009 - reached a quantity of sales that earned myself the #6 spot in the top 10 earning contributors.

• 2010 - reached pinnacle of earnings. Without divulging exact numbers, I he is making a full time living doing stock photography.

This should be a great opportunity to hear about how it's done!

Thank you Justin! You really inspired me to do something with my photos, other than posting them on Facebook. It's been along time since I felt so inspired.

Thanks, Justin. I checked out your portfolio, and I realized I've actually used two of your real estate photos when I was a web developer in Austin. What a small world!

Small world, indeed! Thank you for attending, and for using my photos! :)

Fascinating presentation, lots of practical advice. Also, there is a more detailed instruction manual on the iStockphoto website, if you haven't found it already...

I really liked the presentation. It was great and I really appreciate that these are free and well organized. I do have to agree about the questions. I felt like it was harder to stay on topic and get back into the subject with all of the random questions. I also think starting the program each session with the opportunity to ask whatever question someone may have about any topic isn't the best use of everyone's time. I think this would be great after for whoever wants to stay but I am sure I am not the only person that has to really hustle to get home from work, eat quickly and then get to freemont on time. It would be better if the actual program started at the allotted time and we didn't hurry just to hear answers to questions that don't apply to us. Otherwise, thanks for doing these.

I learned a lot, and enjoyed Justin's presentation. I look forward to the next one, which should be even better and a bit more structured..

It's easy to understand why Justin is so successful: his friendly and helpful demeanor is a great business model. It was simply outstanding of him to share so many insider secrets to a roomful of possible competitors.

Thank you all. I had a terrific time, and I am definitely looking forward to a part 2. Next time I promise to strike a better balance between Q & A vs. presentation time. However, I know there are a million burning questions.

Justin was generous in information and spirit in sharing his experience and insider's tips for breaking into stock photography. My favorite meetup from this group so far!

I do wish that he would have talked more rather than answering questions although I did learn from hearing his response to some of the questions.

Incredible, Justin captured the audience. Two hours seemed liked 45 minutes. My thanks to Justin and his sincere desire to help us and share his knowledge. Pleas see if Justin will come back as soon as possible. He has incredibly talent and insight for he does. We may never be able to do what he does so well, but I will try.

    Sincerely,
    Greg Shaw

Assuming I even make it into one of the 41 spots, what is the parking situation? I have not been here before.

    January 15, 2014

    • Mike A.

Adobe has (free) guest parking near it's building, however it tends to fill up quickly. Otherwise, there is street parking (free after 6pm, I think). There is are also several pay lots nearby and under the Fremont bridge (which is super close to the Adobe building). I hope that helps.

      January 16, 2014

    • Matt

Thanks, Mike. Where exactly is the guest parking lot?

Is there any need to bring gear to this particular meeting? I usually don't go anywhere without my kit bag but will it be necessary, helpful or something to rest my feet on? (just kidding, I'd rest my feet on rusty razors before my kit...)
    Thanks!

    January 1, 2014

    • Howard H

It's always up to the individual member whether on not to bring extra gear. Generally there is no WiFi internet access in the meeting room and cell phone coverage is pretty weak for what ever reason. Most meetings do not have any requirement for accessing either PS or LR unless you like to follow along with the speaker as they demonstrate some feature(s) or other. The slides and/or files used by the speaker are not generally available through the SAPSUG Meetup site.

Hi guys, I am not a photographer, but I am a model wanting to get into stock photo sites. Can someone tell me if this workshop would be useful for a model? Thanks!

    December 24, 2013

    • Robert D.

Yes, it depends on what you want to get out of the meetup. It looks like this one is geared toward the "ins" and "outs" of successfully submitting and hopefully making money from stock photography. If, however, you're more interested in an actual modeling session, there are a number of meetup groups that specialize in that. Just search meetup.com for things like glamour, fashion photography, group shoots, modeling, creative portraiture, etc. You can also browse modeling websites like Model Mayhem, One Model Place, etc for any local photographers you might want to work with.

There is no current plan to stream this meeting.

  • Josh D.

I'm excited to be enlightened on January 21st. Thank you!
