- Week 3 - Deconstructing Religious Systems
Week 3 - "Peeling the Cosmic Onion", a Journey of Spiritual Transformation So far in our journey, we have been "clearing the path ahead", so to speak, by examining the barriers which fundamentalist western religion can sometimes put in our way. When belief systems stifle the imagination, hamper critical thinking, or encourage the rejection of scientific facts, our search for Truth can suffer greatly. In our first two meetings, we took a closer look at the traditional view of Hell, as presented by much of western culture, and examined the different ways in which people interpret religious texts, focusing specifically on the Judeo-Christian scriptures. We found that the doctrine of Hell can cause lasting damage to both those who adhere to it, as well as those it demonizes, and that, while the Bible can be a valuable resource in its own right, ignoring its inherent historical context and weaponizing it to hurt others can have tragic consequences. At our next meetup, we will finally confront the source of these stumbling blocks by critiquing religious systems themselves. While western Christianity is necessarily our focus, we welcome other perspectives on other world religions and how they can enrich and/or damage people's lives. Please consider joining us at Ridgetop Coffee & Tea in Sterling, starting at 7:00pm on Monday, June 3, as we conclude the first section of Part 1 of our Series! If you are unable to make it in person, but are interested in attending remotely, please post a comment in the event Discussion. We have the technical capability to allow remote participation via Zoom, but have thus far not had the demand for it. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you on the 3rd!
- Week 2 - Deconstructing God's Word
Week 2 - "Peeling the Cosmic Onion", a Journey of Spiritual Transformation A bit of context for those just joining our journey: As we begin to examine the impact that our scientific and philosophical views have on our spirituality, it is important to understand how some doctrines often found in more fundamentalist western religions may, in fact, hinder our pursuit of Truth. At our last meeting, using Rob Bell's "Love Wins" as a guide, we confronted the doctrine of Hell, as presented by much of Western Christianity today. We discussed the potential damage that this exclusivist view can do to those who have never been exposed to an alternative viewpoint, and the very real harm this belief system does to the groups that it demonizes. SEEKERS Anonymous instead chooses to embrace a philosophy of radical inclusion based on love rather than judgment. At our next meetup, we will take a closer look at the various ways in which religious texts can be interpreted, focusing specifically on the Judeo-Christian scriptures. Please consider joining us at Ridgetop Coffee & Tea in Sterling, starting at 7:00pm on Monday, May 13, for what is sure to be a rousing discussion! If you are unable to make it in person, but are interested in attending remotely, please post a comment in the event Discussion. I am presently working out some details to hopefully allow remote participation via Zoom, and will provide more information as it becomes available. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you on the 13th!
- Week 1 - Deconstructing God's Justice feat. "Love Wins" by Rob Bell
Week 1 - "Peeling the Cosmic Onion", a Journey of Spiritual Transformation For those who missed our Series kickoff on 4/2, a bit of context: As we begin our journey of questioning the world around us and examining the impact that our scientific and philosophical understanding has on our spirituality, it is important to examine a few of the less helpful doctrines that often find their way into more fundamentalist western religions. Our first 3 meetings will decompose these religious systems in order to evaluate which aspects may be helpful and which may, in fact, hinder our pursuit of Truth. The topic for our next meeting is "Deconstructing God's Justice", featuring the book "Love Wins" by Rob Bell. If you have a chance to read the book before the next meeting, I would highly recommend doing so, but I will send out chapter synopses and discussion questions prior to the meeting date, so reading the book isn't strictly necessary. Our next meetup will be held in the Meeting Room at Ridgetop Coffee & Tea in Sterling, on Monday, April 22 @ 7:00pm. If you are interested in attending but are unable to make it in person, please weigh in on the group Discussion, where I ask who would be interested in participating via Zoom! I am presently working out some details to hopefully allow for this, and will provide more information as it becomes available. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you on the 22nd!
- Introducing a new local Discussion Group for the Spiritual Seeker...
Welcome! We are so excited to announce the inaugural meetup of the DC Metro chapter of SEEKERS Anonymous! Originally founded in 2016, SA's primary goal is to provide a safe, judgement-free space to discuss the "big questions" of life and spirituality. How did we get here? Is there a design or purpose behind the Universe? What is reality made of? Does my life have meaning? And who (if Anyone) is in charge of the whole thing? For our 2019 season, we are introducing a new series called "Peeling the Cosmic Onion: A Journey of Spiritual Transformation". Open to all, the series will follow a path of "Deconstructing" some of the harmful doctrines of ultra-conservative Western religion, and engage our minds in questioning the composition of our world, our Universe, and ultimately, even our perception of reality. In the second half of the season, we will discuss ways of "Reconstructing" a broader sense of spirituality that is fully open to questions and uncertainty, while embracing the mysteries of our wondrous Universe. Please visit our website at http://www.seekersanonymous.org for more information on the group's purpose, principles and general expectations. We hope you will join us as we embark upon a unique journey of intellectual discovery and philosophical insight.
