Uber, Ford, Telefonica & Others Discuss Connected Car Apps

The $1 billion acquisition of Crowd-Powered GPS App Waze was a wake-up call to Silicon Valley and the world. Connected Car apps have arrived. All of the major car manufacturers are putting in place Connected Car strategies. Municipalities are looking to Connected Car apps to alleviate parking and traffic congestion. Insurance companies hope to tap the power of Connected Car apps to gain better insights into driver behavior and to deliver individualized policies.

Innovative startups such as Dash aim to make it easier to own and take care of a car while also providing enhanced safety and connectivity at a lower cost. Large telcos and service providers are adding mobile data to cars, turning the freeways and cities into dense data hotspots with possibilities for mesh coverage supplanting traditional fixed wireless data delivery and opening up new entertainment and information options for car apps.

This panel seeks to explore the future of the Connected Car through the lens of applications and answer three key questions: What is possible now, what does the future hold, and what are the new economics and likely use cases of the Connected Car.

Confirmed Speakers:
- Alex Salkever, Global Product Manager, Telefonica (moderator)
- Matt Sweeney, Engineering lead, Uber
- Kurt Buecheler, SVP, Business Development, Streetline
- TJ Giuli, Research Lab Leader at Ford Motor Company

    I've never seen such an active conversation on a Meetup event page but now that the event is over the conversation doesn't have to stop here. So I'll add my shameless plug as well, please feel free to use our new connected cars forum at http://drivencommunity.net to continue the discussion.

    The discussions were very insightful. Thanks Alex. It was a pleasure meeting everyone. One of the topic that came up was Distracted Driving and Smartphone usage while driving. We at MightyCarma are currently working on a solution for this problem and are gearing up to launch on Indiegogo in two weeks. Our product allows for safe, legal & convenient use of several smartphone features while driving and can be integrated into existing car. Please do signup on MightyCarma.com to be notified when we launch. Thanks

    @Leon Raykin
    You asked: What percentage of the new-purchase and in-service fleet do the manufacturers and after-market technologists expect to see in 2020, 2025, 2035

    R.L. Polk tracks this data - basically they expect average age of cars on the road to remain in the double digits moving forward. It is 11.4 years right now. A 2009 public version can be seen here: https://www.polk.com/knowledge/publications/the_impact_of_declining_new_vehicle_sales_on_the_aftermarket_business

    Note however that this 2009 report already had 0-5 year cars as under 40% of the overall population, and average car age has risen 15% since then.

    I think it is safe to say that 0-5 cars will be a significant, but minority of the car population even in 2020/2025 - unless the economy really picks up.

    That's why we at Park.IT seek to use AutoAide to Connect the cars already on the road - rather than the cars yet to hit the road.

    Just found out about this Meetup. I'm the co-founder of a connected car startup called Driven. We will be at DataWeek + API World Expo all day but will try to make it to this event.
