Haoyi Li at Spotify this Thursday, LangSec, By the Bay TV, and more!

Folks -- we're hosting Haoyi Li, one of the most amazing Scala evangelists globally, on Thursday, and our Spotify friends are having us back in their tremendous office on Market St.

Please manage your RSVP responsibly.  If you live in the southern regions of the Bay, you can catch Haoyi at LinkedIn (Microsoft) on Friday.

We'll do an AHA -- Ask Haoyi Anything -- in San Francisco, too!

There's a sparser density of our meetups due to the Spring By the Bay conferences and my global travel, expanding European community stewardship.  I really need your help, folks, in organizing meetups in SF.  If you want to become a co-organizer, please email me, so we can keep the great things coming.  The co-organizer duties include

  • identifying great areas of interest
  • inviting speakers advancing those areas
  • identifying new voices in the community
  • connecting with the new companies
  • setting up dates and venues
  • please email me at the email below if you'd like to help

In addition, my great friend (and Moscow math high-school classmate!), the Dartmouth Professor of Hacking, Dr. Sergey Bratus, is running a LangSec workshop in San Jose on May 25th.  LangSec is a new area of security research where the programming language features are used to formally hacker-proof software architectures.  This year the focus will be on Rust, with great speakers.  In the inclusive spirit of FP, we always like to showcase advances of Scala's little siblings.

This year's Scalæ By the Bay is becoming Scale By the Bay, to allow for this holistic and inclusive approach to thrive.  It will still be the best Scala conference anywhere, period, and it will remain so by expanding both horizontally, into data pipelines in more languages, and vertically, with Data By the Bay immediately preceding and meaningfully overlapping with Scale.  Scala is used for the most important, crucial backend jobs of AI, as it emerges -- with the potential to both uplift or end the human race! -- and AI By the Bay keynote by Stuart Russell, on provably beneficial AI, can only be properly implemented in strongly typed languages suitable for mathematical proofs while being practical and broadly adopted.  And we have one (and only) such language here.

Finally, we're always struggling with raising video sponsorships for this meetup.  At the same time, we produce and publish some of the best content at the By the Bay conferences, and many of you had asked how they could help -- even donating money through this meetup.  We've thought of a sustainable way to keep FunctionalTV with all the meetup talks free and going, and have published all the talks from the AI By the Bay conference, the best AI conference of 2017 bar none, on our new, supporter subscription channel

bythebay.tv

The full rationale is described on my Medium blog at chief.sc/subscribe-bythebay.  If you want to see our meetup recordings going strong, please subscribe yourself, or your company, to our supporters' channel.

Please email me with any thoughts, anytime, at [address removed].

Happy Spring, and here's to a great spring of thought in our community!

Cheers,
A+
