SF Babel: San Francisco's International Language Exchange Meetup

  • May 28, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

OVERVIEW

We try to provide a fun, friendly, relaxed group where you can practice speaking a new language and meet people from all over the world!

Our gathering takes place in a bar environment, so there is usually music playing and we hope to have a lot of people so it will be busy and bustling. This is obviously still a fairly new meet up, so invite lots of friends and just come hang out and practice another language!

HOW IT WORKS

The idea of the group is that you give help to the group (helping those who are learning your native language) and you get help from the group (you are helped by others who speak the language you want to practice). This way everyone benefits!

We typically have native speakers of French, Spanish, English, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, German, Polish, Italian, Dutch, Turkish, Mandarin, Russian, Armenian, Arabic and many other languages.

When you arrive, just introduce yourself to Marcus and Matt and they will introduce you to others who speak the language you want to practice to get you started. It's fun and FREE!

HOW LONG IT LASTS

We get started at 6:30 pm and the group is usually there until at least 11pm, but you can arrive and leave at whatever time you like.

QUESTIONS?

If you have any comments, questions, problems, concerns or ideas, just talk to Marcus or Matt about it. We will do our best to make sure you have a positive experience!

Remember, this group is a hobby for us; we run it just for fun, we love it and we hope you will love it too!

Hey Marcus & Matt! I'm pretty excited that you'll host the first meetup tomorrow! :)
But unfortunately, I'm not sure now if I can join it. Perhaps I might take my friend as a guest but perhaps I might be absent or just be late. Can I still join you if possible??

    May 27, 2013

    • Matt W.

Hi Mai! Of course you can show up late. We'll be there until at least 1030. When/if we move, it will be posted in the comment section here. Please come! Bring your friend too, the more the merrier. :)

    A few suggestions:

    Americano Bar 8 Mission St

    Cigar Bar 850 Montgomery

We had language meetings in both places

SF Language Lovers is meeting at the Cigar Bar once a month

    May 24, 2013

    • Rebecca L.

Can I make a not Cigar Bar request? As someone who isn't a fan of Cigars, I've never attended that particular meetup.

      May 24, 2013

    • Marcus J.

      Hey Rebecca,

It's a good meetup, and I don't think I've ever experienced anyone actually smoking cigars there!

We have a spot for next week and if we don't like it, we'll just go somewhere else.

does it count if my german is terrible? i will at least make you laugh sometimes. i know i can do that

      May 24, 2013

    • Marcus J.

I think I can say, "i only know a little german"
      So that's good, right?

Do you think you can find a bar (spot) that is quiet enough that each person can hear each other's voice without shouting? I have never stayed at the bar in the Palace Hotel on the Market at New Montgomery St. Yet it looked nice. If it is too noisy or having smokers around (regardless if they are by the door), I will have to pass the great opportunity.

    May 24, 2013

    • Marcus J.

Actually, just going to do this. I'll post directions for people and a few quick photos. This bar will be the first as we got permission from the owner, but it seems like a lot more people than we expected are planning on coming, so it might bet noisy! It shouldn't be too bad!

      Found! Nice and not loud!

Alchemist on 3rd always has a lot of room.

    May 22, 2013

    • Matt W.

Thanks Benny!! Marcus and I will check into it! We'll decide on a place in the next day or two.

      May 22, 2013

    • Marcus J.

Yeah! I think I've been to Alchemist. We should check it out tomorrow!
I just went to this place on Commercial called ez5bar.
It may be a bit too small but if we are less than 20 people to start I think it would be a nice relatively quiet venue with a cool atmosphere and great happy hour.
