Artists' Books for Photographers (mtg 1 of 6)

  • 6 days ago · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a series of six MeetUps where we will plan and execute an artist's book of our own concept.

Artists' books have a long history intertwined with Photography. Books are both a convenient medium to show your work and an artform in themselves. They allow you to tell a more complicated story, gather a body of work, and create a world between covers.

Check out these resources:

The concept is your own so it can be: personal; designed for a client; commercial; designed to be printed en mass; or a one-off artwork.

We will meet for the following six times:

mtg 1: What is an artists' book? History, examples and exchanging some ideas (I will look for an exhibit that we can maybe attend to kick this off-otherwise it will be in an Oakland location)

mtg 2: Your plan. We will gather to create a plan and share it with the group. In this way we can offer assistance, feedback on your timeline and helpful questions for each participant to take forward.

mtg 3: Resources. Now that each participant has a plan, we will gather to exchange resources and help problem solve whatever we have come against so far.

mtg 4: Progress. We will check-in and again help problem solve, show working drafts/layouts, generally enjoy all the hardwork put in by this point. We can consider printing issues here.

mtg 5: Soft presentation. We will present a (semi) final copy of our book to the group, for everyone to share, enjoy, and dialogue.

mtg 6: (Optional to take part in) I will arrange a space/time for us to show our work as an exhibit. It would be ideal to have an opening to friends, family, and public to show all the hardwork that you have done!

If interested I strongly encourage you to make a commitment to your work and your fellow photographers and attend all six meetings.

Ellyce, I have a fantastic idea for a book that I have been wanting to do for a long time. It is unique and has not been done before. It involve fashion. I couldn't do it then because I didn't have the expertise in photography at the time. I would like to share my idea and work on it as a group and produce a book or calendar for profit. I believe collectively, this group could pull it off. I believe if the shots are strong enough we could make a good deal of money. I would like to meet up to discuss but I cannot come to the meeting at this time. Can we change the time to a latter time so that I could come. I am packing to move to Sacramento this month and by November I should be moved in. Is SKYPE an option or another way to meet as a group through the internet? ????

Hi Janice, would love to hear more about this, sounds exciting-I definitely think skype is an option. I think this would be a separate event though. As this series is designed to let each participant create their own project. Would you like to meet/chat about it before you move, or once you are settled in Sacramento?
