Web Developer (Programmer/Analyst III)

The Center for HIV Information (CHI), a program of the University of California San Francisco, partners with government agencies, foundations, and international organizations to identify and develop information on HIV care, prevention, and policy. This information is disseminated to care providers, researchers, and policymakers nationally and worldwide through electronic media, including Internet and CD-ROM. CHI develops strategies for reaching those areas and individuals in greatest need of high-quality, practical information on HIV/AIDS and related coinfections.

CHI's staff covers editorial, technical, and administrative functions. CHI's projects contain thousands of documents managed using a Java/XML/XSLT and database-driven backend, as well as TeamSite, and the open source content management systems (CMS) Drupal and WordPress.

Core responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Production Manager, the Web Developer (WD) will be involved in technical and production aspects of work across CHI Web sites, CD-ROMs and other projects. A lead on development in Drupal 7, and a proprietary Java-based CMS, the WD will develop strategies that help achieve project goals on tight deadlines. The WD will have expertise in data management and search, familiarity with WordPress, and the ability to learn less familiar systems, such as TeamSite, quickly.

These efforts require being a member on multiple project teams. The WD must be able to develop an understanding of every CHI project in order to collaborate with CHI editors, project managers, and other project team members. The WD provides expertise on technical and production-related aspects of project work plans. The WD codes content for inclusion across platforms, creates user-customized and dynamic interfaces, checks formatting for adherence to project standards, and develops and edits XSLT, CSS, and PHP as needed. The incumbent will also perform other related duties.

Skills/knowledge requirements:

  • Drupal 7 and PHP expertise (researching, installing, and testing modules, creating and modifying PHP and template files, module development, using panels and views, etc.)
  • Expertise hand-coding HTML, XML, XSL, JavaScript and CSS
  • Experience with Java, and database-driven content
  • Experience with Apache Solr implementation and search optimization
  • Experience with developing with usability and information architecture in mind
  • Experience with MySQL and relational databases
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work well under tight deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience with a multidisciplinary team
  • Highly motivated
  • Flexibility in adapting to changing tasks/priorities


  • Familiarity with TeamSite and WordPress
  • Interest in the non-profit sector and HIV/AIDS
  • Familiarity with medical/scientific vocabulary
  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar and usage

Organizational enivronment

This is a UCSF position, based at Mission Bay (1700 Owens Street). Weather is lovely most of the time, and the office is easily accessible by public transit.

The group culture is of a University-based, non profit, mission-driven rather than profit-driven, with high standards and openness to new ideas and personal initiative.

Candidates should enjoy working in a team environment that includes technical and non-technical staff.

This is NOT a telecommute position.


This position is classified as a Programmer/Analyst III (7275) within the University. The posted pay range is $73,600 - $128,600. Actual salary is determined by HR managers according to an internal equity scale. It is very unusual for someone to be hired at midrange salary or higher in this classification.
