Sundance Movie Night (DVD meetup - no reading required!)

Please join us for our Sundance movie night! Every year, some of the most interesting and powerful work in science fiction and fantasy cinema is unveiled at the Sundance Film Festival, and we're very excited about the 2 films from Sundance 2012 we've selected to view. Even if you've already seen one or both, we'd still love to have you join us to share the experience with others. Please arrive on time, so that we can start watching the movies without interruptions or delays. There is an upper limit to how many we can host, so we will be using a waiting list if demand is high enough. Please keep your RSVP updated and accurate!*

This year, we're able to host DVD nights with much higher capacity than ever before. For this and future DVD/TV nights, we'll be hosting them at Houlihan's. We are asking that each attendee pay a small cost to help us defray the expenses of the A/V equipment we've invested in to make this possible, but we'll only charge for these events until the equipment costs are recovered (hopefully by mid-year). If you'd like to pay online (which we'd appreciate), it will cost $6.50 (the extra 50 cents are to cover 3rd party fees) and you can pay with your PayPal account or a credit/debit card. If you'd prefer to pay at the door, it will cost $6 per person, but we ask that you bring exact change (bills only), and please remember to pay for yourself and each of your guests. We will offer refunds for any cancellations up to 10pm the night prior. Lastly, since Houlihan's has been generously cooperative in letting us host events like this in their restaurant, we would appreciate it if everyone does try to order something and refrains from bringing any outside food and drink.

Robot & Frank
Winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Prize

Set sometime in the future, ROBOT & FRANK is a delightful dramatic comedy, a buddy picture, and, for good measure, a heist film. Curmudgeonly old Frank lives by himself. His routine involves daily visits to his local library, where he has a twinkle in his eye for the librarian. His grown children are concerned about their father’s well-being and buy him a caretaker robot. Initially resistant to the idea, Frank soon appreciates the benefits of robotic support—like nutritious meals and a clean house—and eventually begins to treat his robot like a true companion. With his robot’s assistance, Frank’s passion for his old, unlawful profession is reignited, for better or worse. ROBOT & FRANK features an award-winning cast including Academy Award nominee Frank Langella, James Marsden, Liv Tyler and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon.

Beasts of the Southern Wild
Nominated for 4 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Benh Zeitlin), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actress (Quvenzhané Wallis - at age 9, the youngest ever nominated)

Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in “the Bathtub,” a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink’s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he’s no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack—temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink’s health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.

*Since missing one of these meetups is taking a spot away from someone else who wants to attend, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For DVD/TV nights, a no-show will prohibit you from attending any other space-limited DVD/TV night for 3 months after your no-show. In order to avoid a no-show, please update your RSVP no later than 10pm the night before an event. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

Great choice of movies. Set up was excellent. But the timing made it a little late for me. But keep going, this is a great way to see indie movies.

Good choice of movies - I liked "Robot and Frank" the best. And, the venue was WAY more comfortable than I expected. Also, the audio and video were quite suitable! Good times! I'm VERY glad we now have this larger space for our large-draw movie events!

Hi everyone, hope you're excited for Saturday's movie night. Just a reminder to please update your RSVP if your availability or guestcount has changed, to avoid a no-show (which would prohibit you from attending Game of Thrones!).

Also, just a reminder that we are asking for $6/attendee to help cover the cost of the equipment we've invested in to make these movie nights possible. You can pay at the event with exact change (bills only), or if you'd rather not have to remember cash, you can pay online from the event page using a credit/debit card of PayPal account. It's just a few cents more to cover 3rd party transaction fees. Just look for the PAY ONLINE NOW link next to Price on the event page:

Sorry to bow out so late! I was really looking forward to it, but meeting my friends' new daughter takes precedence. If anyone was waiting for a spot to open, enjoy.

As much as I want to see these movies, I can't manage this and the book discussion in the same weekend.

I don't see a way to get on a wait list for this event, but if someone can't make it, I can replace them Thanks

Just reset some settings. The waiting list should be open now. Sorry about that!

So...if one wanted to watch one film, but not the other, would anyone be up for an alternative activity?

Let's keep comments on this event focused on the event itself. @Erik and @All: when discussing plans or get-togethers outside of official meetups, please use the discussion board. Thanks!
