November's Fantasy - The Crown Tower by Michael J. Sullivan (Author Discussion)

• Please join us as we discuss The Crown Tower by Northern Virginia's own Michael Sullivan, book 1 of the Riyria Chronicles (the prequel series to Sullivan's excellent 3-volume Riyria Revelations). We're also lucky enough to have the author joining us for the discussion (and available to sign your books, if you'd like). The book is of middling length, at about 416 pages.

Please keep your RSVP updated and accurate!* Space is limited for this event. If it fills up, please add yourself to the waiting list if interested. Our smaller morning session can be found here.

From GoodReads:

TWO MEN WHO HATE EACH OTHER. ONE IMPOSSIBLE MISSION. A LEGEND IN THE MAKING.
A warrior with nothing to fight for is paired with a thieving assassin with nothing to lose. Together they must steal a treasure that no one can reach. The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm’s most valuable possessions. But it isn’t gold or jewels the old wizard is after, and this prize can only be obtained by the combined talents of two remarkable men. Now if Arcadias can just keep Hadrian and Royce from killing each other, they just might succeed.

*Since missing one of these meetups is taking a spot away from someone else who wants to go, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For book discussions, 3 no-shows in a rolling 3-month period will prohibit you from attending any other book discussion for 2 months after your last no-show. In order to avoid a no-show, please update your RSVP no later than 10pm two nights before a discussion. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

Damn it, Team HADRIAN Rules!!! Wonderful discussion, and excellent comments on both sides (well, on ALL sides if you count Team Pickles and Team Gwen!) of the coin. Hmmm, a 4-sided coin!?? Anyway - it was great to have such an interactive discussion. We should have Mike and Robin back again, in the near future. Maybe when "Hollow World" is released - his up-coming Sci-Fi novel.

Thoroughly enjoyed my first book club. The conversation was interesting, intelligent, diverse and respectful. I look forward to attending others.

Thanks to everyone for making this such an excellent discussion, and special thanks to Michael and Robin for joining us (and of course for writing and editing the books in the first place).

    Team Royce all the way!

Great meet up; and I'm glad I had my first "book club" experience with you folks. Very informative and super cool to have an established and published author present, while we laud him and his most excellent partner/wife with how much we loved his book(s).

BTW: I apologized to Michael afterwards, but thought I should do so to the group as well; it occurred to me at the end as he was talking about how self-editing turned him into a harsh critic that I'm usually more negative in my comments in book club than most--probably because in a prior life I was one of those freelance editors Robin was talking about and then in the years since, all of my other jobs have also been ones that involve finding flaws in things other people have done or anticipating flaws in things they are going to do.

So apologies if I end up approaching book club with a cat/Royce POV rather than a dog/Hadrian one. :) Negative comments aside, as I mentioned at the meeting, I did like the book enough that I bought the other 7 (or 4 depending on how you count them) and read 5 (or 2.5) in the last week alone.

The discussion was good but the small discussions afterwards were my favorite part. So grateful to have been able to attend! :))) Much thanks to Robin and Michael!

I hope you're all excited for Sunday's author discussion. Just a reminder that our revised attendance policies require that RSVPs be updated by 10pm Friday in order to avoid a no-show and to give someone on the waitlist a chance to attend. If you already know you can't make it, though, please update asap.

Also, remember that Sunday is the Daylight Savings Time change (fall back), so please set your clocks so you don't accidentally show up an hour early.

    Thanks, and Happy Halloween!

Also, please remember that our revised no-show policies in effect for this meetup. Thanks!

I just went old school and bought a *paperback* copy of this. I figured since the author was going to be at the meetup I'd take notes this time so I've got specific feedback ;)

Does anyone have a copy of theft of swords I can borrow? If so, I would be forever in your debt. I'll be at RennFest so be happy to pick it up then if you're going.
