Our writers group has grown and evolved since we started it in 2012, and the culmination of each year's efforts is usually centered around NaNoWriMo. Last year, to help prep ourselves for November's 50k challenge, we also participated in Camp NaNoWriMo, which is a more close-knit experience that lets you set your own goal (10k or higher) through a virtual camp setting (we're even sorted into 'cabins' with up to 7 other fellow 'campers').
We've got something special in store for 2014. Those of us that are interested will be participating in Camp NanoWriMo in April, and we're holding our first ever writers' retreat April 23-27, 2014. We've got some really exciting things planned, and this retreat is meant to be a way to give you a LOT of focused and distraction-free writing time in a creative and supportive environment of fellow writers. Here are the most pertinent details and what you need to do to participate:
The retreat is only open to serious, committed writers in our writers group. The retreat will start Wednesday evening (4/23) and continue into Sunday morning (4/27) We'll be staying at a luxury cabin (which means it has wifi and power and running water and heat, rest assured, along with an outdoor grill, firepit, jacuzzi, and a game room). The cabin is southwest of Luray, VA, about a 2 hour drive from Springfield. We will work to arrange carpools as we get closer. The total cost per participant should be $400. This will include lodging and meals and drinks. That's $100/night for lodging, meals, and a supportive and productive environment to write in! The bedrooms will be double occupancy, so you should be prepared to share a queen-sized bed (or you can bring an air mattress, cot, or sleeping bag, if you'd rather). In order to secure your spot, we'll need you to make a $300 deposit by January 31, 2014. You can pay by cash or check at one of our upcoming meetups, or pay by credit card ($311.04) or if we won't see you this month, send me a message and we can work out an alternate method. If you're interested in attending and have not yet signed up, please contact us directly to discuss. We may still be able to accommodate you. The remaining balance will be due by April 9. The exact amount will be determined based on the # of attendees we have and our final budget. Your deposit is non-refundable, but you can transfer it to someone else if you find yourself unable to attend. We all had a blast in the virtual cabins during Camp NaNoWriMo last July. But, the taste of virtual s’mores is nothing compared to the real thing! And, what does virtual campfire smoke smell like anyway – your house’s furnace kicking on??? So this is exactly why we are planning to amp-up the reality - and fun - this year, by putting together an event that is even more supportive to our imaginations. We are going to create a real camp get-away – for writers only!
There will be ghost stories around a campfire. We’ll roast marshmallows and hot dogs. And we’ll give out real badges and pins this year for those who participate in our write-in events! When you're hitting a roadblock or your hands are cramping from writing, you can take a walk in the woods, or sit on our deck and watch the sun set over the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley, while you refuel your brain and compose that next brilliant scene in your story.
We will ask every participant to contribute to the overall success of the event by actively chipping in (through setup/prep, cooking, cleaning, leading activities, etc.). And, just like our own writing, this event is ALL about what you put into it! To add a little variety to the weekend, so it's more than just hanging out and writing, we will also have supportive and rejuvenating activities planned throughout the days. Think about what you'd like to share with the group!
