Since it came up at today's event, Paolo Bacigalupi's new book, The Drowned Cities, is a sequel to Ship Breaker, so also a YA.

He will be reading at the Bethesda Public Library on May 10th at 5 PM. The event is being sponsored by the Politics & Prose bookstore.

As will Christopher Paolini (Eragon, etc.) and Vernor Vinge (A Fire Upon the Deep).

If anyone would like to attend, you can switch to the AM session for our book discussion, to give you time to head into the city after. RSVP for September's Sci-Fi (Morning Session) - Peeps by Scott Westerfeld.

There are several conventions that are in our extended area or of national interest

Fairpoint - This is a media convention outside of Baltimore in Timonium. Feb 15 - 17. There are several guests including Felicia Day

Boskone - This a major general convention with a strong literary focus in Boston Feb 15 - 17. Guests include Vinge and Pournelle.

Ravencon - This is a general convention near Richmond, VA. The main guest is Kevin Anderson. April 5 - 7.

Balticon - This is a general convention in Baltimore, May 24 - 27. Vijay said we will have another Meetup there. GOH is Joe Halderman
[Edited by Vijay: the Balticon meetup can be found here]

Worldcon (LoneStarCon) in San Antonio Texas, August 29 - Sept 2. Guests include Datlow and Spinrad. Worldcons are more expensive ($200) than local cons, but you can get a supporting membership for $60 that lets you vote for the Hugo award (and receive the voting packet with 5-6 novels, novellas, novelettes, short stories, graphic novels, and nonfiction books).

Dragoncon in Atlanta will overlap Worldcon, August 29 - September 2. This is a huge convention with a heavily media/comics focus but usually some big name fantasy writers as well. Vijay said he may organize a Meetup for this one.

Capclave. Outside DC in Gaithersburg. Oct 11 - 13. Guests of Honor are George RR Martin, Sharon November, and Howard Waldrop. Vijay said we will do a meetup for this one too. This is small, usually 500 or so, and very friendly. I help run this, so can answer questions.

Thinking long-term, the World Fantasy convention for 2014 will be in Arlington, VA at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Nov 6 - 9. This convention is noted for handing out big bags of free books. I'm involved in this one too.
