Calling all Drone Fans! Save-the-date for the MAKE Drone-Fly-in!

MAKE's new issue (Feb/Mar 2014) hits newsstands January 21 and is all about drones! This is also our first issue in our new expanded format + increased frequency to 6 times a year. So more real estate to showcase awesome photos and detailed diagrams of the growing number of drone designs from quadcopters to fixed-wing, and talk about the creative, interesting AND provocative applications being bandied about! At MAKE, we like the idea of "homegrown" drones, the idea that all the parts are readily available for ridiculously reasonable prices to build your own. To celebrate the meteroic rise of drones, MAKE is hosting a family-friendly Drone Fly-in event! Join MAKE editors, up-and-coming drone companies and startups, and local drone user groups, Monday January 20th from 1-4pm.  Bring your friends, families, and fellow drone fans for this unprecedented event! MAKE will provide food and refreshment, copies of the MAKE drone issue, and cool MAKE swag!

Looking forward to the next event!

In the meantime, if anyone's interested in more autonomous drone action, we have some great speakers lined up next Wednesday (2/19) in SF. Meetup details here: http://bit.ly/1bwwFXb

Hope to see some of yall there!

I loved all the home brew ideas. Pool noodles, styrofoam wreath forms, plastic golf balls. I wish there was more Fpv demos but one of the fpv flyers said that there were simultaneous fpv flights which caused interference and he quit early. Maybe a sequenced demo order of flights fpv so that some fpv is always going on.

3RD needs to make one! I guess it would take digitizing the video.

      January 22, 2014

    • Glenn E.

Actually channelization through spread spectrum, either frequency hopping or direct sequence, is independent of the payload- independent of whether the video is being digitized or sent analog or whether it is video or something else. However with all the types of systems, it would be a big challenge to guarantee the same system with mutually exclusive (guaranteed non interfering) codes.

Hello, everyone. I enjoyed the fly-in today—it was fun to see so many people hanging out and flying! I posted some pictures from the event over on Facebook (public album): http://on.fb.me/1bJMOXf

It was really cool, nice to meet so many nice people with interesting projects. I was hoping to meet the folks from Skycatchers but did find them.

Wow biggest Fly in yet! Over 200 attendees. Thanks Make that was amazing fun! So great to meet all those great minds. Blown away by all the drone builds and ideas. Can't wait to do it again. Stay in touch everyone.

Enjoyed it a lot. I wish there had been just slightly more organization so I could have made sure to meet everyone individually. I'm sure I missed a lot of you.

My otherwise impressive aircraft has been modified and needs to be calibrated before I can fly it around people, so you're not alone. Too bad I didn't know about this a little sooner.

Strapping on a styrofoam cutout of my version of the Make robot onto my Elev8 and seeing if it will fly... I've never flown without crashing. I am sure tomorrow will be no exception. FUN!

That's a bit of an....odd time for a fly-in. Unfortunately I'll be at work and can't make it. I'll be at the next one if it's on a weekend!

    January 16, 2014

    • Sherry H.

Hi Thomas - we decided to take advantage of the MLK holiday - which coincides with the launch of MAKE Vol 37 on Drones. Sorry that you will be working, and maybe the next one will be on the weekend. I

Just a heads up for anybody who was hoping to play paintball, too. The paintball field will be closed on Monday. It's a drones-only event.

Don't forget to bring your blankets and lawn chairs on Monday!

Looking forward to the day. And, we encourage folks to bring your family. MAKE will host a picnic, be giving away copies of the new issues and flying some drones. The weather looks amazing, and the makers that are coming are pretty excited to be showing off some of their flying drones, techniques and more.

Are we meeting in a building near 1230 or at the South end of Commerce Blvd where it looks to be pedestrians-only and surrounded by trees?

    January 17, 2014

    • Elias D.

No. We will all be parked just North of the paintball field. Go down the Commerce Blvd. it will be obvious. The PB filed is on one side with the trees the open air field on the other.

      January 17, 2014

    • Glenn E.

Thanks. Google maps has trees present at some resolutions and absent in others. Just wanted to be sure we were flying outdoors with tree clearance...
