Point Lobos weekday dive

Hoping there are some people interested in doing a weekday dive at Point Lobos. The weekend reservations are pretty booked but the weekdays are always available. I've never dove there so it would be great to have someone join that's experienced with the site.

Great day of diving with great people! Might have to go back to wetsuit diving but can't wait to do it again! Maybe Stillwater Cove in Carmel next time (see http://www.shorediving.com/Earth/USA_West/CalN/Stillwater_Cove/index.htm)?

    1 · May 16, 2013

    • Anita P.

I'm game for Stillwater cove anytime!

Thanks all- great to meet all of you and thanks for helping orient me to the new dive site. Pt. Lobos rocks- will definitely have to go again. All the best, Peter

Awesome photos btw! You and Felipe need to publish your pictures!

Great to meet everyone too! Thanks for putting up with me! Next time I won't be so high maintenance. XX

Not sure if everyone is getting their tanks at Bamboo Reef in Monterey but just got confirmation they have 12 tanks available for Thursday.

    1 · May 14, 2013

    • Nunaddict

Asked about reserving and was told it was unnecessary for Thursday or any weekday actually.

      2 · May 15, 2013

      How was it today?

      May 15, 2013

  • Felipe

Lat minute heads up, make sure you bring cash! From what I remember, they do not take cash at the entrance for the $10 per car.

I live in San Jose, so car pooling is a challenge, but we can carpool from the subway to Point Lobos.

    1 · May 15, 2013

  • Dan F.

    3 Things:

    1) Lets figure out rides. I have a car and I live in Oakland. Does anyone want a ride with me? Alternatively, I can catch a ride with someone else. It doesn't make sense for anyone to drive down there solo. 2) Felipe, do you want to meet at 9AM at Point Lobos? I know some people will probably need to rent gear or fill their tanks so maybe it would be best to set a meeting point in Monterey instead. I usually get air from Seven Seas or Bamboo Reef dive shops. Do you guys want to meet at one of those spots?

    3) Lastly, let's make sure we have phone numbers. Mine is 515-4O8-5OOO.

Would love to go but I’m not familiar with the Monterey area. It’ll just be me so I’ll need a buddy. BTW what kind of suit- 3mm?5mm? Also, I’ll be driving from the city. Two tanks definitely. It’s been a year plus since I’ve been diving so a buddy who’ll be patient with me refamiliarizing on the first dive at least would be appreciated.

Sorry to ask this here but is there somewhere in SF where I can check out my equipment? Just moved here in November so I haven’t had time to check out dive shops, etc.

    • Felipe

Hopefully you can find out Wednesday because they work Saturday through Tuesday on the reservations. However, Dan is right, ours took more than a week and if you show up then and pay you will be fine if it is not full (which I agree with Dan that it will not likely be full).

      May 13, 2013

    • Nunaddict

Doh! Didn't see that they don't work Monday's. Hopefully it will work out and the recent reports of the great visibility won't work against us!

I have family in Monterey that has told me that the wind has been unbelievable recently, no doubt causing swell. We should keep an eye on Swellwatch.com just to make sure the dive isn't going to be a wash the day of. www.swellwatch.com

    May 10, 2013

    • Dan F.

...I've done about 20 dives at Lobos and there was only one day when the water was too rough to dive. Unfortunately, they don't offer a refund when conditions are bad but bad conditions are very rare.

      May 10, 2013

    • Anita P.

Last dive I did was in the bay of Thailand, 2.5 hours out, 15-18 ft waves. They should've called it (I was stupid for going!) but the lure of money and having a captive group beckoned. I'm sure Lobos will be fine.

      May 11, 2013

  • Felipe

    Hi gang,

I got the reservation confirmation from Point Lobos along with the Paypal link: Once they confirm the reservation they send you a link so you can pay online as soon as possible (they give you three days). I am seeing ten teams on the calendar for Thursday and hope those are us, let me know how the registration is going.

    May 10, 2013

    • Dan F.

I just paid for Peter and I so were are set. The remaining divers (Nunaddict and Anita) should start the reservation process right away. They usually don't fill up on weekdays but there are already a lot of dive teams with reservations so I wouldn't risk it.

Hi Anita, Dan and I will also be heading down from SF/Oakland, so I'd you'd like to carpool, please let me know. Do you have all your own gear?

    2 · May 10, 2013

    • Anita P.

Yes I’ve got my own equipment but I’m going to need to get a thicker wetsuit and a hood. Only have a 3mm now!

      May 10, 2013

    • Anita P.

Does anyone else want to carpool? I can drive, too. If not I might join you and Dan.

Just spoke at length with my dive master, Jim Steele of Steel's scuba, and he says conditions have been good, but to check Swellwatch as an FYI. Also, he advises diving to the left of the cove for better topography.

Wasn't sure how to answer the doodle as I can do Thursday and/or Friday. I will need to be a third on a reservation as the friends I thought were able to come can't make it. Since it looks like we all need to rent tanks, did we decide on which dive shop to meet for rentals?

    1 · May 7, 2013

    • Dan F.

I plan on going to Bamboo Reef in Monterey. Then I'll get some food at the Subway a couple blocks away (296 Lighthouse Ave). I'm pretty sure everyone is on board to meet at the Subway at 9:30 after all gear rentals and air are sorted. Then we'll head to Lobos.

      May 7, 2013

    • Felipe

Subway at 9:30 works for me.

I'd like to do 2 tanks to make the drive worth it for me...

    1 · May 7, 2013

Yes, 2 tanks all the way!

      2 · May 7, 2013

Two tanks and maybe a snorkel in between...heard last weekend there may be leopard sharks in the shallows!

      May 8, 2013

I thought we were set on the dates, but saw Micha's comment and decided to double-check. I already made the registration for Thursday, but will change it if Friday works for more people. Please take one minute to go to this doodle:

Just catching up on the posts, sorry. My phone is[masked] and I'll be driving down from San Francisco. Dan- I'll give you a call about carpooling, which would be great. I have all my gear, but need tanks. 2 tanks is cool with me. Also, just confirming we are on the 16th, and meeting at the Subway on Lighthouse at 9:30? Thanks ya'll- looking forward to it. Best, Peter

    2 · May 6, 2013

  • Nunaddict

Btw, how many tanks did people want to do?

    May 6, 2013

  • Nunaddict

Sorry for the radio silence on my part. Trying to get a couple friends to come as part of my dive team. Good to know three is ok for a team, Dan! I'll probably drive down the day before to test out a new drysuit at the Breakwater and get the buoyancy dialed in. If not, it'll be wetsuit diving for me, but I can just meet you all at the parking lot. Let me know if anyone is interested in some easy breakwater action on Wednesday. Looking like it's going to be a busy day with 8 teams already signed up!

    May 6, 2013

  • Micha D.

I'm afraid I will be going down the night before, so I'll have to meet you all there, or at a meeting point, ideally, where we don't have to pay too much in parking.

    2 · May 6, 2013

  • Peter T.

Hey all, would love to join- I guess I will hope for one more person and then sign up as a buddy team? If you guys know anyone else wanting to join, please connect me to them or have the RSVP so we can get a buddy slot. Thanks- looking forward to it! Best, Pete

    May 4, 2013

    • Dan F.

They let you do 3 person teams at Lobos. Nunaddict and I still have to register so if you send me your diver certification number I'll take care of the reservation. I'll need $10 from each of you to cover the fee. PayPal works best.

      1 · May 5, 2013

    • Peter T.

Great- thanks Dan- sent you my SSI cert number.

      1 · May 5, 2013

  • Felipe

We are in the difficult part of coordinating this because we need to make sure we have an even number and sign as buddy teams. I think us four attending up to now are set. I heard about more divers probably joining, we will try to make sure everybody has a buddy.

    May 4, 2013

    • Dan F.

You don't need an even number. Teams of 3 are okay.

      May 5, 2013

  • Dan F.

Should Nunaddict and I sign up as a separate team?

    May 3, 2013

    • Felipe

Yes, go ahead and let him know and get the cert number, I will go ahead and sign with Micha.

      May 4, 2013

    • Felipe

      Thanks!

      May 4, 2013

  • Micha D.

I'd like to join in! Hurrah for weekday divers!! Sign me up please :)

      May 3, 2013

    • Micha D.

Thanks, Thursday works for me, but I'll do either.

      May 3, 2013

  • Felipe

Before I register the buddy team(s), please let me know if Thursday works or if you prefer Friday (you may have guessed by now I prefer Friday but will do Thursday if that works better for most of us).

  • Alberto N

I have just 12 immersions and I need to rent gear, would be ok?

    May 3, 2013

    • Felipe

Alberto, depends on when and where you had your dives. If they are recent and in cold water you would be ok. If they are in warm water or not recent, you may want to do a refresher in breakwater to assess rented gear and the appropriate weight you may need.

      May 3, 2013

  • Felipe

We need to register as buddy teams in order to dive Point Lobos ($10 per diver entry fee), and once they have 15 buddy teams they do not take any more.

I checked the Point Lobos website, there are already eight teams for Thursday May 16 and two for Friday May 17. I am fine either day, we just need to make sure to register before it is full.

In order to register, we need to provide our certification agency and number. I can register a buddy team (or even two according to their online form) for Thursday, just email me your name, certification agency and number. http://www.pointlobos.org/diving/dive-calendar
