UPDATED: Dive Monterey - Bamboo Reef Fun Dive

Hey all! Updated info...we're going to jump in on the Bamboo Reef fun dive. I talked to the shop the other day and because of the craziness going on at Breakwater if conditions are good they will likely be heading down to one of the sites in Carmel to get away from the crowds. I was told there might also be a BBQ afterwards, but that's still up in the air. Their fun dive costs $15 to cover the cost of DMs that lead this.

If you'd like to join us, you should call ahead to Bamboo Reef and reserve two tanks. I strongly suggest reserving any rental gear you need as well.

Plan to be at Bamboo Reef by 8:30am. I'll email directly those of you who RSVP with cell phone contact info so we can be in touch day of.  Looking forward to a couple of good dives!

(Big Sur was a bust yesterday: inky blackness, all the way down past 100'. I actually did Breakwater today, and it was nice! I had 15', give or take, all through the middle reef.... Sorry I missed you guys at Monastery, I didn't get down until 1030.)

Hey, I'll miss this one as we're planned to dive on Saturday Aug 25th and gonna try to dive Coral Street but by inflatable boat. Catch you guys next time.

Swells were getting bigger so we opted for Lover's 3.

Will be driving down this afternoon from Oakland. If anyone needs a ride (I have a two-seater so only limited room for gear) or would like to connect for dinner/drinks/etc. tonight please drop me a line.

FYI, there are a couple of rental drysuits for sale @ AnyWater Sports in San Jose, at unbelievable discounts: Diving Concepts trilam front-entry w/P-valve $399, Bare neoprene rear-entry w/soft boots & all neoprene seals $100, both Large. !!! I'd buy both right now if I didn't already have two suits...... :P

I'll check back on the boards (or PMs) if anyone wants to hook up on Sunday - depending on how nuts Breakwater is I'll likely skip Metridium Fields & head to Macabee or Lovers.

    August 22, 2012

    • Kevin W.

Terry - we are going to meet at Bamboo Reef and go from there. Definitely want to steer clear of Breakwater. If you don't want to meet us at the shop we can give you a call when there is a site picked?

I will be sure to make it. I am going to try to make the DUI tour on Saturday seeing as I have never dove in a drysuit. Normally I would be happy to pick up people who need to carpool but I will be staying 2 days this time around.

Looks like I'm diving Big Sur all day Saturday, but I did want to hit the "local" shore on Sunday (Lovers, Macabee?). Curious about the DUI demos, but not if it's a lot of waiting around for a quick, shallow dive....

    August 21, 2012

  • Patrick

This is a shore dive, right?

    August 20, 2012

    • Kevin W.

      Yes...this will be shore diving

      August 20, 2012

No problem we will just go with the flow and whatever the group is doing. Is that something we pay for are we just gonna pick a spot and hop in with the other group?

    August 17, 2012

    • Elaine O.

I've joined Bamboo Reef's fun dive once and didn't see the point of paying $10 to join a group. It's not as if you're getting a dive guide per team. They'll only have a couple of DMs who will probably pair up with newer divers.

    • Kevin W.

Thanks for the input Elaine. Kyle -yes I say let's play it by ear. Someone at their shop here in SF said there was talk of them doing a post-dive BBQ. In my book that would be worth the $10! I say let's rally at Bamboo Reef and make a call then.

Hi there. Nice to meet you. Wondering how deep you guys are planning to go down?

    August 19, 2012

    • Kevin W.

Maya - it will depend on the specific dive site, but the shore dives I've done there I don't think have ever taken me below 65 feet.

      August 20, 2012

  • Elaine O.

Hmm I actually want to participate in the DUI event but also join you guys on the 2nd dive.

    August 14, 2012

    • Charlie E.

From the DUI Demo website info I think the demo dives are lead by a DUI diver so it's a controlled event of when you dive, exit, return suit and enjoy a BBQ lunch something. 2nd dive could be scheduled after 2pm when the BBQ is closed. Worth asking if you can do the 2nd dive with their demo suit or you may have to use your own. Have FUN!

Elaine - we could touch base that day via cell phone and see where we end up diving to try to connect for a dive if the timing works out?

      August 16, 2012

  • Kyle K.

Hey Kevin, so I am confirmed with my buddy Pete for this dive. If we are interested in Pt Lobos we should reserve it very soon as they already have 12 out of 15 groups reserved. What are you thinking at this time? Also I am coming from Martinez in the East Bay if anyone is around there I would love to hitch a ride.

    August 15, 2012

    • Kevin W.

Hey...some of us were talking about this at the happy hour this week and sounds like there is interest in tagging along with the Bamboo Reef fun dive (unless they want to do Breakwater, then I'd pick another site) since there are some divers new to the area. But if you'd like to do Lobos do you want to post that as another option as a suggested meetup and I'll send it out to the rest of the group? Might be some additional takers.

8/25 and 8/26 weekend also happens to be DUI demo day at breakwater. It is a very good chance to try out DUI drysuit of your choice. The cost is $10, including lunch and a few guided drysuit dives.

However, if you really want to enjoy your weekend diving, you should go somewhere else. There will be lots of people in breawater, no parking spaces. Most of the lawn area will be occupy by DUI tents. In water, people kick up all the sands, and bad viz.

    August 8, 2012

    • Kevin W.

Aaron - yikes thanks for the heads up about the DUI demos. Then we definitely do *not* want to be diving Breakwater. it will be a mess (both parking and viz). We'll have to get away from there.

      August 13, 2012

  • terry g.

Oh, duh, I also wanted to throw out there: there are apparently plenty of reservations still available for Pt Lobos on the 26th.......? Maybe we move this meetup over to Lobos...? :P

    August 10, 2012

  • terry g.

I was thinking about checking out the DUI fest, but will in all likelihood just go straight to Lovers 3 if anything. If I get an early enough start I usually check conditions at Monastery - so if anyone is up for that let's make a plan!
