The Starfish & the Spider 101: Learn How to Apply the Starfish Philosophy

“In decentralized organizations, anyone can do anything. A part of a decentralized organization is akin to a starfish arm: it doesn't have to report to any head of the company and is responsible only for itself.” ―The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations ~ Starfish organizations deliver enormous value to stakeholders and empower people to take action to help themselves and each other. They are networks of people, connected by common goals and values, examples include: Craigslist, Wikipedia, Bitcoin. These loose collections of people are a disruptive force and can upend entire industries in a matter of years. As our world evolves, an understanding of the dynamics of starfish networks is a powerful tool. ~ SCHEDULE 12:45pm Networking 1:15pm Intros 1:20pm The Starfish & the Spider 101 3:20pm Final Thoughts 3:30pm Networking 4:00pm Cabana closes (Mini-Golf?) WHY? Over the last year and a half, we have been experimenting with the principles in this book to grow a community and informal organization in the Bay Area and beyond. It has been the experience of a lifetime! As we take the next steps in our journey, we want to help others understand the tenets set forth in this book, share our victories, our mistakes, lessons and tips with you so that you too can harness the power of the starfish and use these insights to foster a better world. WHAT? We'll be covering the book, "The Starfish & the Spider". If you would like to read the book prior to this event, you can find it on eBay, Amazon, Audible, etc. If you don't have time, here's a great summary of the book: http://bit.ly/StarfishSpiderSummary This may be a recurring event depending on interest and how deep participants will want to go. WHERE? This event will be at held at a cabana in the Stagecoach Greens Mini Golf Course. Feel free to pick up food and drink at the Spark Social food trucks across the street or at the vendors on location. We'll be in the cabana with the BIG INFLATABLE PIZZA SLICE(S)! ~ ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS: Hey, all. My name is Ann Marie. I am a co-organizer for SF Ethereum, and the Community Marketing Specialist at MakersPlace - a blockchain-backed rare digital art marketplace. (It's like an Etsy for authenticated digital art). Before MakersPlace, I was part of Starfish Mission - a community that skyrocketed through the evangelism of the starfish philosophy by members of the community who also lovingly and resolutely put their blood, sweat, and tears into building it: http://bit.ly/BlockchainCommunityThatSkyrocketed Matt Quinn has run blockchain educational meetups for the last 2+ years. He started the SF Ethereum meetup and was one of the co-founders of Starfish Mission who, through the lense of the book's philosophy, focused on supporting people and open-source projects with informative blockchain events, outreach and writing. 2 months after the floodgates were opened, he wrote this article (re-posted here): https://medium.com/@m.quinn/the-way-of-the-starfish-5d706c2b2604 Please give it a read if you get the chance!
