Since the beginning of the year, I've hiked approximately 260 miles as of April 28. Not bad, but these were all day hiking miles. Although I appreciate a day hike, I've been yearning for something else... something that a few hours on the trail cannot provide. Yeah, I've had a hankering for some backpacking.
If you would like to backpack more often, or if you are a newbie and want to learn, then sign up. Here's the plan: two training/planning day hikes, then I'll start posting the Backpacking Series for the summer/fall. At the training/planning day hikes, we'll share ideas, discuss possible trips, make sure everyone is prepared with the appropriate gear, etc. The first training/planning day hike is Mt. Wilson on the 11th of May, followed by a Mt. Baldy (via the Ski Hut trial), Dawson Pk., and Pine Mtn. (elevation gain of around 6,500 feet and 16.5 miles) day hike on the 18th of May.
Mt. Baldy via the Ski Hut Trail, Dawson Peak, Pine Mtn. and Baldy Again: Saturday, May 18.
We'll be hiking up to Baldy via the Ski Hut Trail (most likely, we'll snack and plan out/discuss the backpacking trips at Baldy's summit), hit Dawson Peak and Pine Mountain, and then go up Baldy again. The last ascent is really the hardest part of the hike... 1,300 ft of elevation gain in only a mile! This is an intermediate/advanced hike (elevation gain of approximately 6,500 feet and around 16.5 miles roundtrip). Our pace will be moderate, but we can adjust to the group's collective abilities. We'll meet at 7:00 am near the intersection of Mount Baldy Road and Falls Road (in front of the gate). Or if you are early, I'll be gearing up next to a silver Sentra. If you need directions or if you are wondering about what to take, please email.
