1000 Robert E Lee Boulevard, Stone Mountain, GA
Meet at 9:45am near the bathrooms at confederate hall. If you don't have a park pass and don't want to pay for parking...see alternatives at the end of this write-up. We will start the hike at 10am.
Lets hike the Cherokee trail around the base of Stone Mt. This is an intermediate hike of 5.5 miles. This scenic hike takes us past two lakes, an old time gristmill, a historic covered bridge, an outdoor quarry exhibit, and offers great views of the mountain. This is not a tough trail. It has some ups and downs, crosses a couple of small streams and a few areas of climbing over rocks and exposed granite, but is otherwise mostly well-tended and wooded trails. We will maintain a moderate but steady pace of 2.5 miles per hour we will complete this is 3 hours. This is NOT a beginner hike due to the distance and the speed.
Bring snacks, water, layered clothing, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat. There is no car pool for this event. The daily parking fee at the park is $15 if you don't have an annual pass.
Parking alternatives...Please note this has changed....down the street and a little closer to the West Gate is St Michael & Angels Episcopal Church at 6780 James B Rivers Memorial Dr, Stone Mountain, GA 30083. You will see the sign. Pass the sign and the church and make the next left and a left into the parking lot. Its less than a 10 minute walk to confederate hall. I understand the church is very open to using their parking lot any time church is not in session.
