What we're about

Click here (https://sites.google.com/view/spsatlanta/home) to quickly access documents such as registration, themes, rules, etc.

The Southeastern Photographic Society (SPS) was formed by photography students at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center to help its members learn the skills for capturing great images and sharing them with others. The society has been serving the photographic community since 1976, now with well over 250 annualy paid members.

Each month SPS hosts a competition and lecture/presentation on the first Friday. Competition themes vary each month with the goal being to encourage members to shoot outside their "comfort zone".

On the 4th Tuesday of the month SPS hosts their popular member "Learn Shops"; informal lectures/presentations from club members to help teach each other a variety of photographic skills, from lighting and composition to Photoshop and Lightroom.

The club tries to arrange for field trips throughout the month. These field trips are designed around upcoming photography themes but also around events that take place in the local area. Sometimes we just like to get out with others and share our knowledge.

In order to enter images into competition (digital or prints) you must first be a fully paid SPS member. Annual dues are $30 for individuals and $40 for households, due each January.

Lightroom or Photoshop?

Clairmont Presbyterian Church

Lightroom or Photoshop? Lightroom is like one of the all-in-one toolkits from Ikea for doing many household chores. It's got a hammer, a drill, and other odds and ends. Photoshop is the Craftsman 903-piece Mechanic’s tool set. It has almost every tool, so you can mount a cabinet or take apart your 1959 Buick LeSabre. The differences come down to manipulation vs. editing. With Lightroom, you can edit photos. With Photoshop, you can edit and manipulate them. Jim Morgenthaler will show you how to use many of the unique and powerful features of Photoshop that can greatly expand your creativity. ****************************************************************************** SPS Monthly Meetings (first Friday of each month) are for its members and guests. While competition entries at these monthly meetings are restricted to currently paid-up members, we ALWAYS welcome visitors interested in photography to attend. The Learnshops (fourth Tuesday of each month) are intended for members, but again, we welcome visitors. If you attend regularly, we ask that you help support the club (which pays for the rental of the facilities, supplies, and equipment) by becoming a member!!! ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY – with John Mariana

Clairmont Presbyterian Church

ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY - ARTISTS RE-PRESENTING REALITY Photographic Artists make Photographic Art, they do not create their images by a single capture. They see the world differently and then show others how they see and feel the world. The final artistic print is their representation of the world through their eyes, mind, heart and creative artistic talents. The tools of the craft are a camera and a lens, but the print is result of their artistic vision. Join us on April 5th, 2019, when John Mariana shares his specialty, “seeing and presenting the world in his own style, color palette, filled with the emotions he wants you to feel”. Ansel Adams has said that the image taken in the field, although very reliant on proper technique, was merely the canvas from which to work his darkroom artistic magic. Digital images today are imported to Photoshop or other editing software where optimization takes place through the process of digital blending of different versions of an image and the use of completely separate images. These techniques allow the creation of truly immersive images. This is a evening that you do not want to miss. You can find more information about John and his work at: http://www.marianaphotography.com. ****************************************************************************** John is a founding member of the Booth Photography Guild at the Booth Art Museum in Cartersville, GA and a long time member and friend of SPS. ****************************************************************************** SPS Monthly Meetings (first Friday of each month) are for its members and guests. Jackson Street Bridge

• What we'll do During the timeframe of March 17, 2019 through April 14, 2019 the sun will set behind the Atlanta skyline when viewed from Jackson Street Bridge. Any day in that range of dates should yield interesting shots but we will plan to meet on April 6th at 7 pm to capture the sun's descent - Sunset that day is 8:01pm. After sunset we can also stay around and do some long exposure shots of the car lights. Refer back to this meetup occasionally for possible date changes that may arise due to weather. To view the exact position of the sunset each day, consult The Photographer's Ephimeris: http://app.photoephemeris.com/?ll=33.760225,-84.374316¢er=33.7604,-84.3872&z=16&spn=0.01,0.02&dt=20180324212200-0400 • What to bring Camera, lenses (wide angle and telephoto), neutral density filters, tripod and cable release • Important to know There is generally free on street parking nearby. ******************************** LIABILITY NOTICE: By signing up and attending a Meetup sponsored by the Southeastern Photographic Society, I acknowledge that these activities can be hazardous and that I could be injured or my property damaged. SPS Community Photography Series

Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams Library

The Toco Hill/Avis G. Williams Branch of the DeKalb Library System asked if our club would present a series of photography programs for their members and the general community. The program is primarily aimed at folks new to photography, but we wanted to make it available to SPS members as well since we know we have some less experienced photographers who might find the programs helpful. The meetings will take place every other Thursday at 10:30 a.m., beginning on April 11th and concluding on May 23, 2019, and will be conducted at the library, which is just off Clairmont Road near our usual Friday meeting location. The topics and speakers are listed below. I am posting this four times on the MeetUp site so that the notice will show up for each date. If you have any questions about any of the programs, please contact me at [masked]. April 11 “Beyond the Snapshot – Simple Tips for Taking Better Pictures” Jack Martin April 25 “Getting the Most from the Camera in Your Phone” Greg Comstock May 9 “Travel Photography – Capture and Share Those Great Memories!” Harriet Dye May 23 "Preserving Your Photographic Memories” Jeff Milsteen
