August 2014 Monthly Meeting—History and John Mariana

Our August 1st monthly meeting has as our competition theme, History, and our presenter and judge is John Mariana. John will be replicating a prior presentation he made in Macon earlier this year. Here is his description.

How do you create images with impact? In this program I will present the aspects of light that bring out the most of what you are photographing. Too often we take light for granted. I will show images for the various aspects of light and explain how to use the light creatively. There are three aspects of light – color, hardness and direction. I will cover color, soft light, hard light, side light, top light, front light and back light. Sample images are used to show the way to use light to bring impact and an emotional response to images. The color of light differs from the time of day. Early morning light is yellow warm and rich, late day light can be cool or red warm. How do you use the color to bring impact and a response from the viewer of your images? Let me show you.

To see sample images, click on the write-up he did for the Macon presentation.

John will be also our judge for the competition. For our theme, History, let's take a trip into the past and highlight images that celebrate objects and events from a bygone era.

John Mariana always comes to SPS with extraordinary insights into photography, excellent communication, and valuable tips for photographers. Check out his website,   Also check out his workshops--John Mariana's 2014 workshops.

SPS Monthly Meetings (First Friday of each month) are for its members and guests. While competition entries at these monthly meetings are restricted to currently paid-up members, we ALWAYS welcome visitors interested in photography to attend.   The Learnshops (Fourth Tuesday of each month) are intended for members, but again, we welcome visitors.  If you attend regularly, we ask that you help support the club (which pays for the rental of the facilities, supplies, and equipment) by becoming a member!

A great group of increasingly talented photographers. A competition night judged by John Mariana not to have been missed - he is clearly a great teacher and presenter - the best. He's forgotten more about photography than I'll ever know. (How many points for me in that, John? ;-)
