The dissertation process can be isolating and meeting deadlines is difficult for any candidate, but add to that the challenges of raising a family and maybe for some of us (myself included) even working full time and, wow, you have the challenge to meet all challenges. We'll meet regularly to check in, share what's working for us and what's holding us back from progress, and provide feedback and encouragement. We will each pick an accountability buddy too if that helps. And then we'll celebrate together when we finally finish!

My story:

I am a Biologist, but started my PhD in Environmental Science & Policy in 2009(!).  My coursework was funded by my employer, but my research was not.  They gave me two years paid sabbatical to pursue my courses.  I had my second child during that time.  Yet, I rocketed through my coursework and came back to work in Fall 2011.  A year later, in Fall 2012, I proposed and successfully defended my research, passed my comps, and advanced to candidacy.  However, a few months later, in Spring 2013, I took a leadership detail leading restoration work after the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which drained me of every ounce of energy outside of my work and kids.  I returned to my home office in Fall of 2015 with all new assignments and (multiple) Supervisors, but still cannot seem to make headway.  My girls, ages 6 and 11, are my focus, but I need to find some structure and the support of people facing similar challenges to help me get over this hump, get my survey out, collect my data, and write my dissertation... it feels like a very long way to go.  I have until December 2017 to do all of this and I wonder whether it is even possible.  I would like to give it a try and help others with similar challenges along the way.
