3d miniatures

I recently read an article about 3d scanner 'photos' that are used to print miniature sculptures. I grasp the printing concepts, but from what I can tell the miniatures are printed in one or two colors and then painted. Is this the case, or does anyone know of a system that actually paints/prints/inks the 3d miniature during the printing process? I think this would be pretty cool and marketable... your thoughts are appreciated.

I know this isn't the minature your talking about but thought everyone could appreciate this article.
