When web fonts first arrived on the scene, they gave us near limitless typographic options and control without having to rely on a conventional “web safe” font stack. With that power came performance implications for our users due to the render blocking nature of web fonts. In this talk, we’ll look at new techniques in the browser that provide instant content such as `link rel="preload"`, `font-display` And the CSS font-loading API. We’ll also look at JS based fallbacks for non-supporting browsers as well as the performance implications of variable fonts. Finally, we’ll examine the different performance considerations for self hosted fonts versus cloud hosted fonts.
