StL Poetry MeetUp Group Monthly Meeting

  • May 17, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • Carol H's house

Welcome fellow poetry writers. We are a laid-back bunch of "occasional" writers who get together monthly to share our writing with each other. Our meetings begin with 1 hour of socializing followed by 2 hours of poetry. Depending on the number attending, each can read 1-2-3 things. We ask that you bring a few WRITTEN copies to pass around, and for our archive. Critique for those who wish it is gentle and non-authoritarian; each of us has his/her own style of writing, and we welcome diversity. Our writing prompt/theme for April is a "plant". If that does not resonate with you, ignore it and write on any topic you wish. If anyone would like to try a poetic form, I am suggesting writing a Terzanelle. As you can see, the form is a1 b1 a2, b2 c1, b1, c2 d1 c1, d2 e1 d1, e2 f1 e1, f2 f1 a1 a2. The a's, b's c's, etc rhyme. The middle line in each stanza is repeated in the third line of the next stanza. You can see more formal terzanelles on-line, just type in terzanelle and you will get some. Have fun!
Since we meet in members' homes, the exact address is only emailed to those who have RSVPed they will attend the meeting on April 26th. That email goes out on the Friday before the Sat. meeting. Also please note: If you have RSVPed and find you cannot attend, PLEASE CANCEL THE RSVP so the host/hostess knows how many folks to prepare for. Since we limit our number to 20 your uncancelled RSVP may deny someone else a place. (The website does all of this automatically.) For our social hour we have a "goodies table"; each person is asked to bring a nibble of some kind or bottle of wine to share (nothing fancy, please). We look forward to meeting new poetry friends. It's all about POETRY!

I enjoy watching the changes each meeting. Very introspective and quiet this month. But the poetry ALWAYS is very good!

Carol thanks for the heads up on the terzanelle style. When I see you Saturday please tell me how to pronounce that. I'm having fun with it though, 2 poems written it that way, can't wait to share.
