Single Volunteers of the Twin Cities - President's update

From: SVTC P.
Sent on: Sunday, October 24, 2010 9:01 PM
Welcome to all of our new members! At the SVTC group site alone, we now have over 300 members signed up on the SVTC group site. We have a great mix of new and experienced SVTC members making up our volunteer base.

We are glad you have joined us. SVTC prides itself on the great reputation our members have earned for the organization since its inception in 1999. We pride ourselves on coming through with not only the full compliment of volunteers, but volunteers our non-profit partners can count on to do their best, No matter the event, SVTC volunteers are the face of SVTC.

Please check the calendar frequently and volunteer when you see an event that catches your interest. If you're signed up for the email list, you may occasionally get an "Urgent Call" email. We appreciate your consideration and help in filling volunteer spots when we find ourselves short of the requested number of volunteers.

We encourage members to consider leading volunteer events or working with non-profit organizations to help develop new events for the SVTC calendar. It's just another way to get involved and help SVTC serve our non-profit partners throughout the Twin Cities. Let me know if you're interested in learning more.

If you have any questions about your responsibilities as an SVTC member, feel free to ask. Email the event leader or a member of the Board. If you're on, post a message to the message board and anyone of our members can help you out. Review the member Rules of Conduct, No-show policy and FAQ at or

First of all, let's thank both Elaine Grittner and Bruce Burton. They are both long term members that have been involved in SVTC leadership for quite some time. Elaine has been Vice President and Project Development Coordinator for the past year or so. Bruce served on the Board for an extended term, initially as Treasurer and this past year as a Director-at-Large. Both Elaine and Bruce voluntarily stepped down and opened up a couple of positions for new faces on the Board.

On behalf of the SVTC Board of Directors, I would like to welcome Dan Christiensen and Jeff Haggerty to the SVTC Board of Directors. Both Jeff and Dan have a significant amount of volunteer experience outside of SVTC, so we're excited to have them join us.

Jeff is now one of our two Directors-at-Large. Jeff has been with SVTC for a few years now. You may have been on the fall boat cruise that Jeff has organized for SVTC, or perhaps a volunteeer event. He initiated SVTC's presence this August.

Dan is now our Secretary. Dan joined SVTC last January, and took an immediate interest in learning more about the organization. He's living proof that new members are welcomed to get involved in any level of the organization.

SVTC Board of Directors
Mary Buhr, President
John Columbus, Vice President
Keith Peterson, Treasurer
Dan Christiansen, Secretary
Jim Garrity and Jeff Haggerty, Directors-at-Large

Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 20th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Details will be posted to the calendar shortly.

We will welcome new members, field their questions and give them an opportunity to mingle with other SVTC members. (Note: New members can start volunteering as soon as they join SVTC. It's not necessary to wait until you've had a chance to attend a new members' meeting.)

Our discussion will focus on new volunteer and leader procedures related to transitioning our calendar from the existing SVTC website ( to the SVTC group site. ( We are working on procedures that will allow SVTC members without access to to continue participating in volunteer and social events.

If you haven't already signed up for SVTC membership on, we recommend you do so. The SVTC Calendar of Events at our original website will remain in place. You can continue to participate in SVTC events without joining, but the format makes posting events and managing volunteer sign up much easier.

The number of volunteers is automatically tracked and is set-up to only accept the number of volunteers specified for the event. It can automatically waitlist people and clear waitlisted members if someone else cancels.

The leader can accept email sign ups from members who don't belong to the SVTC group and track them by updating their own RSVP on to show a guest. A leader can track multiple guests to keep the total number of volunteers up to date on

One of the challenges we face during the transition of the SVTC Calendar to is that some leaders are having a difficult time keeping up the status of volunteer sign-ups on the SVTC website. When a member who isn't on emails a leader to sign up for an event, he/she may be disappointed to find out that the event is already full.

If you're new to, feel free to direct any questions to our organizer or assistant organizers. There is a lot of flexibility for members to set their own email/message preferences. If you haven't found the setting that's right for you, let us know.

Thank you for your continued interest in SVTC!

Mary Buhr
SVTC President
