Java 8 Lambdas and Streams

Oracle is running a free online course to help developers learn Java 8 Lambdas and Streams. Because it's more fun to work on these things in a group, we're going to run meetups to get together and:

 1) ask/answer questions about the material

 2) help each other with the homework

In order to get the most from these sessions, it will be best to watch the lessons in your own time, and come ready to discuss them or ask questions about them in the session.  There will not be enough time to go into all of the content in detail.

The course is three weeks long, so we will run three of these sessions to look at each week's homework.

Sign up for the course

If you complete the course, you'll get a course completion award. For this, you will have to sign up to the course via the link above and submit answers to each week's quiz before the deadline.

Bring your laptop!!

Hello everybody! I'm not able to attend the meeting today, but I have a question about a thing that came up in last session. We talked about the example: "stream.parallel().filter().map().sequential().filter().map()..." The idea was being able to run some parts of the stream in parallel and other ones sequentially. We know that the pipeline or stream is only evaluated when the terminal operation is called. In the lesson 2, section 5, page 2, Simon says something like that the last call to "sequential()" or "parallel()" wins. So, maybe it is not possible to run parts of the same stream in both modes. Could you talk about it at the meeting please? Thanks so much for your help!

Yes, you're right - what we said last time was contradicted by what Simon said. I assume Simon is correct! The last call wins, so your example will be executed sequentially

I've written a blog post summarising the session http://trishagee.github.io/post/java_8_mooc_session1/

Hi there! I never have assisted to any event like this nor in RES offices so I am wondering if there is any prerequisite for participate or I can take my laptop and carry on.

You should be familiar with java, and have an IDE (and java) installed on your laptop. Other than that, there are no real prerequisites

I should also mention: the course is, not surprisingly, in English. I expect most of the discussion will probably be in Spanish, although as usual I will likely be limited to speaking in English. Come prepared to hear both languages, and to speak whichever one you want to!
