Showing Up For Racial Justice - Community Meeting

This event is put on by SURJ Sacramento and I am passing on the event information. I will be there.

"If this is your first meeting, please attend the new member orientation at 6 PM

Come together to #endwhitesilence as we build racial justice capacity and community in the greater Sacramento area. This will be a space to have meaningful dialogue, build relationships and action plan in order to engage other white folks in support of our local Black Lives Matter chapter.

For more information about SURJ, including our mission and values, please visit www.showingupforracialjustice.org.

Meetings are every 4th Wednesday of the month from 6:30-8:30 with an orientation for new folks at 6 pm. There will be a kid zone and potluck style refreshments (sign up for the potluck here: http://bit.ly/2eWtYSR).

Participants will have the opportunity to network with other community members, engage in dialogue, join workgroups, discuss action plans for addressing racism and building a stronger community together."

So I know the purpose of surj is mostly to engage with white people and provide resources for white folx involved in social justice, like tools to call out/in their families and friends. Does that mean this meeting is also for that purpose? I'm black and Japanese but I grew up in a white neighborhood. My parents emulated their white neighbors and imparted values more in line with conservative white America. I believe I could learn/unlearn a lot here. But I also don't want to presume. Is anyone a member of surj? Do you think these resources are too specific to reach other groups?

Rach I haven't gone to a meeting but my understanding is it's for white folks who want to support black lives matter without taking over spaces where black people need to share with each other. From reading their material I believe you could self identify about what group fits. From you description this thanksgiving tip sheet I found from SURJ seems really relevant: http://www.showingupf...

i don't know about Sacramento but I have POC friends in other cities who have been involved with SURJ.

I also know some POC who are calling for an end to groups like SURJ and calling for white folx to join POC-led organizations. #complex

Hi Rach, this will be my first meeting at SURJ too, so I'm not sure about your questions. I am currently using Sac Feminists as a partial clearinghouse for any and all progressive activities in Sacramento so members are aware. That's why this event is posted. If you want to go and find out more but you don't want to feel like you're on your own there, I'll send my number out in a few days so you can sit with me if you want company.
