Day Hike (2B). Cataract and Helen Market Falls (Sacramento Group).

  • DESCRIPTION: (8 Miles, 1,250 feet elevation gain, Waterfalls, and Lakes!)

The rains are back! And with the rains, the creeks are ebullient again this season. The waterfalls are also exhilarating to watch. A hike to Cataract and Helen Market Falls in the Mt Tamalpais State Park is being proposed for the observed Christmas Day holiday. We will hike the Cataract Trail which parallels the flow of Cataract Creek. The trail is in a lush canyon with redwoods, and flora-fauna to discover. After visiting the Cataract and Helen Market Falls, we will take the high trail with grand views of Alpine Lake, and then descend to Bon Tempe Lake for lunch.  At that point we can decide whether we want to return the same way (out-and-back), or complete the loop via the HIgh Marsh Trail.  The round trip hiking distance is approximately 8 miles, with less than 1,250 feet of elevation gain. The hike is classified as 2B and is Moderately Strenuous, but suitable for most. The pace of the hike however will be easy-to-moderate with frequent breaks and photo taking opportunities.

    HIKING ESSENTIALS & CONSTRAINTS:

Hiking shoes with good traction, hiking poles, warm layers, hat, plenty of water, lunch, and snacks to sustain an 8-mile hike. Expect temperatures to be up to 10 degrees cooler than Sacramento. Severe rain or wind forecast however, will necessitate postponing or cancelling the event.

    DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:

Directions to the trailhead will be provided prior to the event.

    OTHER MEETUP DETAILS:

THERE IS NO COST TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS HIKE. HOWEVER, PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A SMALL, VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION (NOT DEDUCTIBLE) TO SUPPORT THE MEETUP WEBSITE AND LEADER TRAINING. CLICK ON "CHIP IN" BUTTON ON LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE MEETUP HOMEPAGE.

The group size is limited to 25 members. If you have reserved a spot for the hike and cannot participate in the event, as a courtesy you are expected to make the cancellation at least 24 hours before the meeting time. This will allow someone on the wait list to prepare and participate in the hike. Hikers will be required to reimburse car-pool drivers for gas. A compensation rate of $4.00 / hour for at least 4 hours of driving time is suggested. Others may leave their vehicles at the Meetup parking lot at no charge. Members are encouraged to form carpools between themselves. THE SIERRA CLUB IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR TRANSPORTATION TO OR FROM THE MEETUP LOCATION.

    PLUS +1s ON WAITLIST
Hello! Glad to see such a terrific response to the proposed hike. For those of you on the waitlist with a +1 guest reservation, keep in mind that Meetup offers a space (when it becomes available) to single reservations first before offering it to anyone with a +1 reservation. I know, it should be first come, first served. But for now the practice will not change. You are better off asking your guest to make a separate RSVP. Also, do keep in mind that reservations open up during the week leading up to the hike as people are more sure of
