Sac-Sierra Writers Group Monthly Deep Dive

  • Welcome to the Sac Sierra Writers Group Monthly Deep Dive.  This meetup is open to all Sac Sierra meetup members.  A deep dive allows writers to submit a complete unit of fiction (like a chapter or whole short story) and get detailed feedback from the group on narrative, progression of the story, consistency etc.  The thinking is that a full chapter or whole short story is probably much closer to final draft and needs (and deserves) our full attention to every aspect of the writing.

The group does Deep Dives the third Thursday of each month (fourth Thursdays are Short Reads).

Submittal: First timers should come to a deep dive to see one in action; if you like the experience, talk with the group about submitting your Chapter next month.  Deep Dive submittals are generally first come first served, and we schedule two but no more than three.  The group prefers to have the material at least two weeks in advance, paper or electronic.

Agenda: 7:00-7:10 Introductions; then dive into the deep end.  We like the submitter to read a brief passage, then we go around the table with our prepared (and usually detailed) feedback.   Repeat for each submittal.  We finish around 9:30.

The Deep Dive premise: We are novice fiction writers on the path to publication. To get there, we need quality, detailed feedback--honest appraisal of what works and what needs improvement.

At a recent meeting a newcomer remarked that we spent forty minutes on a short read and were only halfway around the table. 'This is taking a long time--how long should this take?'

'As long as it needs,' we all replied.

Enough talk.  Come.  Make it great.  Wire brushing, yeah.
