We are seeking members for a fiction and creative non-fiction critique group - short stories, novels and memoirs only.
We want to cap the group at eight members and we already have two. That means we're looking for six SERIOUS writers, published or unpublished, to form a group that will meet two evenings a month in the common area of 740 Mississippi River Drive, St. Paul. Each meeting, two members will be asked to bring 30 high-quality pages. All members of the group will be expected to critique at each meeting. That means each member will be asked to read each manuscript twice, line-edit the manuscripts and write a brief critique of the manuscripts. We will use the "smile" style of critique - the opening should be positive, the middle of can be critical (not mean) and the last part should be positive. Although people who are unduly harsh will be censored by the group, we need to bare in mind that New York agents and publishers can be very nasty people, and we need to develop thick skins.
There will be $2/meeting charge associated with this group to cover the Meetup fee, and acceptance will be competitive. People who fail to come to meetings or don't live up to their commitments will be asked to leave. We understand that no one is perfect and that last minute problems occasionally foil the best of us.
My name is Bill M., and I have the following experience: I wrote for daily newspapers, including the Denver Post, for 23 years. I have been trying to come up with a publishable novel manuscript for 20 years and am convinced that 2018 will be THE year for me.
