This is my favorite route through PCMR, combining some great tech and cross country flow while minimizing boring uphill grinds. The route is appropriate for strong riders who are confident navigating rock gardens, roots, small step-ups, and off-camber trails. This ride is a blast, and it's one of the few routes in the area to offer some technical climbing challenges. If that's your sort of thing, come on out!
We'll meet at 9:15am at the south end of the upper Park City Mountain Resort parking lot between Lowell and Empire Avenue, east of all the shops (not the lower lot). I'll be in a dark gray Mazda Tribute, riding a black Ibis Mojo.
From the parking lot, we'll climb Lowell to the bottom of Sweeney's Switchbacks, where the route starts with a rocky, rooty, technical climb up Sweeney's Switchbacks to John's Trail. We'll continue up John's for a heavily rooted, tight and twisty climb through the aspens to the top of town lift. Together, Sweeney's and John's are about 1200 feet of climbing that feels like more. From the top of town lift, we'll take John's 99 to Empire Link and catch some air on the way down. After crossing Daly Grind, we'll climb up the other side of Empire Link and find Sam's trail. Sam's will get us back over to PCMR where we'll merge with Little Chief, which links to John's 99 for a fast, flowy race through the trees. After John's 99, we'll descend Moosehouse and Gravedigger, which are a fun mix of rocks, roots, and technical switchbacks broken up by sections of flowy trail. There's also a jump line if anyone feels froggy. From the end of Gravedigger, we'll climb the steep switchbacks of 420 back to John's trail, and then descend the lower third of John's back to Sweeney's to end the ride with a technical descent.
The route is around 13 miles long and takes about 3 hours at a moderate pace.
