The elder tree is considered a tree of arcane wisdom, known as the Sight. Celtic shamanism uses the elder tree to form the sacred hoop on which the shield of the shaman is strung, and fires of elderwood afforded dreams wherein the shaman could walk between the worlds and retrieve the wisdom of the ancestors. (This belief, that elder smoke produced visions, is probably the source of the prohibition against burning a fire of elderwood in the home hearth.)
The Celtic Tree Alphabet assigns the letter "R" to the elder tree. The bird of this season is the Rook, which is also a symbol of death. As well, the colour "Ruadh" (blood-red) is a symbol of the season. The energy of the Moon is "Ancient Wisdom" as we contemplate the endless cycles of birth and death and the many ways our own lives depend upon the lives of those who have gone before. The Yule feast recognizes the Elder King, the Lord of Holly, whose time is coming to an end even whilst the berries of the holly are blood-red against the snow. The Waxing Moon of Elder is a preparation for the festival of Yule, a profound season for communion with, and meditation upon, the Male Mysteries for men, and the Lore of the God for women. Additionally, the Elder King is looked upon as the source of Divine Wisdom, and this is a time, by invoking His presence, when we may explore the Mysteries of Death, Life and Rebirth. In the spirit of the Yule festival, we will at this ritual receive gifts of wisdom prepared especially for us by the love of the Elder King, Lord of the Winter.
Tonight's rite will celebrate the death and rebirth of the Yule Lord, and honor the legacy of wisdom we receive from his energy. Lore will be provided at the ritual, and further information will be posted here closer to the date. Please arrive on time. The customary donation of $10.00 may be made at the counter in the store prior to the rite--no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
