Hike at Government Canyon State Natural Area

  • 3 days ago · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Our hike will be about 5 - 7 miles on dirt trails, sections of which have small rocks. We will be doing a gradual ascent and descent, and at a moderate, comfortable pace. Hiking boots or ankle-supporting sturdy shoes are suitable.  Bring plenty of water (A MUST), and you might want to bring a snack.  We will hike for about 3-3 1/2 hours.

We will start to hike at 9:30 am, and meet at the Visitors Center by the rainwater harvesting tower. So please be there before 9:30 am.  Allow time to pay at the entrance.

Please post messages if you would like to carpool.

Admission fees: $6.00 without Texas state parks pass;  $3.00 with Texas parklands passport for seniors.  If you don’t have a pass and want to purchase one, you can obtain it at the Visitors Center.  If you are eligible for a senior pass, you must show proof of date of birth (at least 65 years old).

If no park ranger is at the gate, drive all the way, and pay your fee at the Visitors Center where we meet.

Please contact the Event Host Nancy Anderson at[masked]-1291.  if you have any questions, or need any additional information.

I just talked to the GC office (7:30 am) and the park is open now. Of course, if it starts raining, they will have to close the trails. I am willing to take a chance and am going out, and look forward to whoever is, as Scout said, stalwart enough to join me! Nancy

We are no fair weather friends! We are stalwart hikers who will soldier on until rebuffed by a driving gale--or closure.

Dear hiking friends, I am looking forward to our great hike at Govt Canyon tomorrow morning, starting at 9:30 am. The forecast is for the rain to start after noon - although of course it is so unpredictable. GCSNA facebook is the site that announces the closures of the trails. I am assuming we can do our hike, but I will check the first thing tomorrow morning and will let you know if the park will be closed. I know it is difficult with a last-minute notice, since most of us have a long drive to get to GCSNA. I am leaving my place at 8:15 - going out with a friend who is interested in joining our group, but will try to get confirmation before we leave. Feel free to call me - 210/833-1291.
    Your frustrated friend, Nancy
