Announcing a new Meetup for San Diego R users group!

What: San Diego R Users Group Meeting

When: Monday, May 24,[masked]:30 PM

3595 John Hopkins Court
San Diego, CA 92121

Speaker: Derren Barken
Topic: Introduction to Classification Models (e.g. diagnostic tests) and Machine Learning in R

The San Diego R Users Group will be meeting on Monday, May 24, from 6:30-8:30 PM at Sequenom. (Prior RSVP requested; please see below).

Our next meeting will be about using R for classification problems, such as diagnostic and prognostic medical tests. This topic will be covered over two talks. In our May meeting, we will demonstrate in detail how to use R with several popular, relatively simple algorithms / packages, including logistic regression and decision trees. We will then discuss some issues which arise in real-world classifier design, such as validation methodology, variable selection, variable preprocessing, and handling missing data. In a future meeting (to be scheduled later), we will cover more advanced classification techniques, such as neural networks, support vector machines, random forests, boosting, and ensemble methods.

Derren Barken is a Bioinformatics Scientist with Prometheus Laboratories. He completed his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at UCSD in 2007; prior to graduate school, he worked as a programmer in Silicon Valley and Boston.

To attend this meeting, please RSVP to Vivian Huang at Sequenom. She can be reached at vhuang at scmmlab dot com, or you can reach her at (858) 353-1370. Please note that the doors will be locked after hours ? it may be necessary to call Vivian?s cell to be let in. Sequenom is located at 3595 John Hopkins Court. The entrance is in the back ? if you park in or near the visitor parking, you will be close.
