Science fiction is often a kind of cautionary tale, a story of a future that might be if we fail to do anything about it. As Ray Bradbury said, “I was not predicting the future. I was trying to prevent it.” I just never could think of an appropriate book.

Well, today Margaret Atwood announced that she is writing a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. Due out in the fall of 2019, the new book will be a sequel to her 1986 dystopian classic about a future where working class women are enslaved for their childbearing abilities. Hmmm. You might have read it before or seen the Hulu series based on the book that has been running for the last two years.

For old time’s (and our future’s) sake let’s read Atwood’s original for February. Since it is a fairly easy and short novel, how about we shoot for Saturday February 2, at the usual time and place?
