What we're about

This is a group for any Norwegians, Norwegian-Americans and all other enthusiasts who would like to meet new people who are interested in sharing Norwegian and other Scandinavian heritage! We are the House of Norway organization at Balboa Park- International Cottages. When you join this meet up group you are not automatically a member of the House of Norway, but are invited to join in all of our events and encouraged to join the House of Norway. House of Norway in Balboa Park

Balboa Park is closed. Until the park opens, no meetings or gatherings at the park will occur. The description below is what you can hope to enjoy once the park reopens. Every Saturday (with very few exceptions) the House of Norway opens its cottage in Balboa Park to welcome visitors to share typical Norwegian treats and to discuss Norwegian culture and history. Bring the kids to visit with Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf from Frozen. See if you can find the four trolls who will undoubtedly spot of our visitors first. You might also be lucky enough to catch our Hardanger fiddler out on the patio. If he's not there, his fiddle will be on display in the cottage. Come see us whenever you can. And if you have Norwegian ancestors, consider joining the House of Norway.

Balboa Park is currently closed. No events or gatherings in the House of Norway will take place until the park is opened again. Look for the Hardanger fiddler on display in the cottage, and ask the hosts to explain how it differs from a violin. Come see us whenever you can. And if you have Norwegian ancestors, consider joining the House of Norway.

Hardanger Embroidery at the House of Norway

House of Norway in Balboa Park

Experience the complexity and beauty of Hardanger embroidery. Join us in this informal learn-by-doing group which will be working on the Sons of Norway Hardanger embroidery cultural skills program, a series of three successively more complicated projects involving cut work within the completed embroidery. The group will meet every other Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. Newcomers are welcome to join us. Hardanger familiarization kits will be available for sale for newcomers to get oriented to the stitches before diving in to projects that are completed and then portions cut out to transform them into Hardanger embroidery. Until the Balboa Park International Village cottages reopen, these meetings will be via Zoom. RSVP to this event to receive a Zoom invitation.
