"Secret Staircases" of Berkeley and Indian Rock

  • Mar 30, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This walk will explore approximately 16 of the 136 staircases and paths in Berkeley with a stop at Indian Rock. The walk will be approximately 3 miles and take no more than 3 hours to complete.

This will be a strenuous stair and path loop from the Berkeley flatlands up to Grizzly Peak Blvd., returning via Indian Rock which we will climb up for the spectacular panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay.

In the early 1900's, street systems and properties were built along the contours of the Berkeley hills. This created very long blocks and a pattern of hill streets with intriguing twists and turns. Therefore, a pathway system was developed to create shortcuts to rail lines.

We will explore some of the beautiful architecture, unique gardens and discover other secrets as we wend our "winded" (hopefully not too winded) way up to Grizzly Peak Blvd., and then head back down via other pathways, staircases and streets until we arrive at Indian Rock. From there, we'll head back towards the starting point and if anyone is interested, we can have a BYO picnic at Codornices Park.

Our walk will begin at the base of Oak St. Path. at the intersection of Glen Ave. and Oak. St.

Indian rock is a granite outcropping of volcanic origin smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood!

It is important to note that the only restrooms available are at Live Oak Park, Codornices Park and the many eating establishments on Shattuck Ave. and the side streets. (see map below) In case of an emergency, I suppose you can bring tissues since we will be passing a few wooded pocket parks along the way?! I have done this walk with a wide range of ages and we haven't had a problem, yet.

There appears to be free parking in this neighborhood on Saturday according to the Berkeley parking zone website, but please double check. I can not be held responsible for parking tickets:

http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/Public_Works/Transportation/Parking_AreaHmap.aspx

We will meet at 9:45 am and promptly depart at 10:00 am. Please be on time because it will be difficult to find us since the itinerary has several options.

That means leave enough time to use the restroom and find parking!

Be sure to bring water and snacks. Rain will cancel. Any stepper who needs to bail out early simply needs to go downhill. Print this map link with street names to return to the start:

The only map of these paths is Berkeley's Pathways published by the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association. The web address is below. The are available for purchase online and at local stores. Call ahead for availability.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Thanks for coming on our "adventurous" stair hike which took a few twists and turns I posted in pictures ;-) We really lucked out with no rain and great views. I was so excited that the rope swing on Stevenson Path was restored and appreciated watching Andy do his yoga acrobatics and Nancy braving it, too! Hope to see you all again on another walk and that you'll post your pics!

    Hi Steppers for Secret Staircases,

The current weather outlook calls for a few showers 10am-1pm with a 30% chance of precipitation. This walk will be a "go" given the current conditions for wet-tolerant steppers. Please do bring rain gear and shoes with traction. I can't promise you great views this time, but it will still be a quaint, good cardio walk. We can adapt our itinerary as the weather dictates. Also, I won't "ding' anyone as a no show who cancels due to weather. Remember to bring water, a snack and use the restroom prior to the walk. See you tomorrow.
