[CANCELLED] Sunset at Lands End with a full moon return trip [CANCELLED]

CANCELLED

It has already rained in downtown San Francisco, all of the live cams show serious fog and there is no rationale expectation that Lands End will be a welcoming hiking venue tonight, so I am going to cancel and hope to reschedule another day.

.......................................................................

Most City Steppers feel quite familiar with Lands End. After all, it was the site of the first hike that this group ever did. But how many of you know what it is like under a full moon?

The time is right to find out...it is summer solstice weekend which should make for a great sunset and nature also scheduled a June 23rd full moon to help to guide us back.

So we'll meet in front of the Legion of Honor Museum and hike 1.8 miles to some (yet undetermined) sunset vantage point near the Sutro Baths (or maybe even Sutro Heights). After the sunset we'll get out the flashlights and try to find our way back (so 3.6 miles total).

For those of you who have never hiked Lands End it is very flat except for one significant staircase (actually a set of railroad ties) in the middle.

Couple of things about this hike:

* Everybody needs to bring a flashlight. And if you don't own a flashlight then get to Target and buy one right now -- this is earthquake country!

* I think that dogs are okay but if you think that your dog might want to interact with an occasional raccoon or coyote then you would definitely need to err on the side of using a leash.

* The Lands End Trail is very safe but the cliffs just a few yards away aren't. So we'll need to pay attention and stick together, especially on the way back. If you don't feel comfortable with night hiking then you should definitely sit this one out.

* I don't think that there are any bathroom options until we get to the sunset, when those in need can hurry down to the Cliff House for their facilities.

* Extreme fog will cause a rescheduling; we'll stay in touch and everyone will need to check back here before heading out on the day of the hike if it looks foggy out there.

* June 23 is the second day of summer in San Francisco so bring your cold weather survival clothes.

* Public transport options aren't great...the 18 bus stops at the museum but it only runs every 20 minutes.

Should be a unique opportunity! Don't forget your camera/smart phone, water, flashlight and weatherproofing. Hope to see you there!

I'll announce it to the full group soon. Hope you can all give it one more try!

    Sorry too foggy

    Hi Everyone-

It's only 9AM but right now the fog in downtown SF is intense and growing worse. If it doesn't clear up significantly by 3PM I'll cancel the event, perhaps reschedule for another day.

I don't think that rain will be an issue and clouds wouldn't hurt but the fog is a different matter.

Normally the City Steps policy is to count a late member cancellation as a No-Show but under the circumstances I think we should waive that rule.

So if you now want to make other plans please update your RSVP to Not Attending. The rest of us will really appreciate the update.

Otherwise, please remember to check your email and/or this page site before you head out.

    Thanks,

    -Jeff

The listing says public transit isn't very good to the legion of honor but another relatively close option is 1 California or the 38 Geary.

Darn it, I wish I could join you---I sprained my ankle on a hike this morning so I'm not going to be able to make it.

Will there be Moon? NBC BayArea weather reports increasing fog, chance of rain from 25% to 45%, especially into the Sunday evening. I am deeply concerned. I will be driving from South Bay and it would not be worth it if there's no Moon. When is the cancelation cut off time?

    June 22, 2013

    • Jeff E.

Check back here at 3PM Sunday. I'll be leaning towards doing the hike. The forecasts seem to agree that the rain will hold off until about midnight.

Some clouds can make a sunset/moonrise much better, just ask any photographer. It is the fog that blacks out everything that would be a deal breaker and there is never any good forecast for that one.

I'm cynical when it comes to these super moons. Many of the non-super ilk look equally impressive to me. But if you'd like to brush up on the science behind this Sunday's moon you can read NASA's explanation here:

super bummed to have to change my RSVP to no... I am doing another meetup that just won't be done in time... but at least happy to give my spot to someone else

For those wanting to witness the rise of the large Super Moon at the horizon this Sunday, that takes place at 8:54, in the eastern sky. I don't know if it will be visible from Land's End but the hike will be a treat, regardless. (Fingers crossed for good weather!)

    Hi Jeff,
It must be some other reason--I didn't make a comment and I'm still getting all the comments.

On your meetup home page, go to account, then email settings. Find this group (or any others, too) and select the email settings icon to the right of the group. In the menu that appears, uncheck the box that says to notify you of any comments posted in events that you RSVP'd for.

Luna, go to your profile - top right and hover your pointer over it and there is a tab you can click for "email and notifications" which will open up some option that you can uncheck, etc. it may limit info that you are/will get thought - not a perfect system.

I don't mind being a sweep if it means getting off the wait list. I use to be a Sierra Club leader and have medical background just in case - so no problems. Let me know Jeff.
