This little hike can get you away from the boring little lights on your gym’s stairmaster or treadmill for at least one day without having to give up on those buns of steel. We'll be exploring some of the great hills and staircases in San Francisco's upper Castro and Twin Peaks area, approx 5 miles in a bit over 3 hours. It is exercise oriented but the pace will be moderate; we'll stop to enjoy the views but would like to keep moving otherwise. The objective is to enjoy the great scenery, company and elevated heart rates without necessarily setting any Olympic records.
This is a very good hike if you are still exploring San Francisco. We'll visit some great spots, literally in the middle of the city, that have never seen a tour bus. Plus you'll learn the secret of how a little stroll can double as a workout in this town.
We’ll meet in Duboce Park near the playground. After warming up with Buena Vista Heights we’ll move on to the fun and rugged Corona Heights, then over to Mt. Olympus. We’ll cross Tank Hill on our way up to Twin Peaks. From then on it is all downhill until we get to the Castro area at about 2:30PM where, if we wish, we can have some well deserved nourishment, probably at the Firewood Café (http://www.firewoodcafe.com/castro.html) or whatever in the Castro/18th area. Lunch is optional of course, only for the hungry.
Public transport is a good way to go; the starting point is a few feet away from an N-Judah stop, and the N-Judah connects with Bart at all of the stations under Market Street. The lunch stop is a .8 mile walk from the starting point if you do drive. Please allow time to find parking.
Please bring: water, sunscreen, camera/smartphone, an extra layer in case Twin Peaks is windy and perhaps a snack to hold you until we get to eat at 2:30. The difficulty level of the staircases should be self explanatory. People do them every day without too much difficulty but if you've been sedentary of late they might not be right for you.
Featured staircases include Vulcan and Pemberton. There are also secluded trails, hidden gardens and some other secrets that you will have to come along with us to discover. So plan to join us for a fun, sociable workout with some amazing views.
