About the Moderator:

Roger Royse is the founder of Royse Law Firm, PC, a business and tax law firm with offices in Northern and Southern California (www.rroyselaw.com). Roger practices in the areas of corporate and securities law, domestic and international tax, mergers and acquisitions, and fund formation. His clients include international emerging and middle-market companies and high net worth individuals. Roger has represented companies in a variety of industries, including clean tech,  Internet, life sciences, entertainment and new media, sports, real estate, retail and mobile devices and applications. Practicing since 1984, Roger’s background includes work with prominent San Francisco Bay area law firms as well as Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy in New York City. Roger is an adjunct professor at the Golden Gate University Law School Tax program (Corporate, International, Property Transactions) and is a frequent speaker, writer, radio guest, blogger and panelist for bar associations, CPA organizations, and business groups. Joe Jasin is Managing Director of DNA Partners, LLC,  an early stage venture capital investment firm. DNA invests in digital media value chain technology companies based in the U.S. and China.  Joe spends about 20 to 30 percent of his time in China. Joe has over 20 years of experience in a career that spans globally in the mobile/wireless and digital media industries, having establishing a robust cross border presence in the U.S.  and throughout Asia.

Joe is presently in active dialogue with the open-source software community, sourcing and indexing the emerging landscape worldwide, including:  Mozilla–Firefox OS, Jolla-Sailfish, Samsung-Tizen, Canonical-Ubuntu.

In 2010, as a team member of China Mobile Ltd. (Beijing HQ), he worked on a stealth venture capital fund for the OPhone ecosystem initiatives.  Previously, Joe served as Vice President of Corporate Development for SK Telecom in Seoul, Korea.

Joe is  founder and chair of the local Software Developer’s Forum – Mobile Group, an organization dedicated to cultivating  community among software developers in Silicon Valley since the year 2000.  Joe has now taken that group, and converged them into an entity called DNA Digital, an intelligence think tank.

Nationally, Joe is the founding member of CTIA’s Wireless Innovation Council.  On the international front, he is  a formal adviser to the U.S. Department of State and the  APEC Office of Commerce on issues related to 5G spectrum allocation between the U.S. and various Asian countries.

Mohammad Islam is a senior associate at Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), a Menlo Park-based venture capital firm that focuses on seed, venture and growth stage investments in enterprise, consumer, and disruptive technologies.

Mohammad joined DFJ in 2014 and targets frontier technologies in machine intelligence, biotechnology, healthcare, and next-generation infrastructure across enterprise and consumer. He has sourced DFJ's investments in Zymergen, Atomwise, and a stealth analytics database company. Mohammad is also a co-author in a chapter addressing the disruption of employment by the rise of automation and artificial intelligence in Disrupting Unemployment: Reflection on a Sustainable, Middle Class Economic Recovery.

Prior to joining DFJ, Mohammad was on the technology team at In-Q-Tel, where he conducted technical diligence on investments made on behalf of the US Intelligence Community (IC). He was responsible for bridging the gap between the technology needs of the US IC and emerging commercial innovation. Mohammad also held engineering roles at Lockheed Martin, the National Science Foundation, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Mohammad graduated with a B.S.  in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, with interdisciplinary honors in international security studies. While at Stanford, he served as a research assistant in both the Very Low Frequency Group, which investigates the earth’s upper atmosphere, and the Center for International Security and Cooperation. He also worked as a developer at Soup, a startup working on building applications to make it easier for nonprofits to raise donations.

 

Leonard Speiser is a venture partner and co-founder of Neuron.VC, the world's first AI-only venture investment fund. The fund has invested in a  private commerce company and a company that detects cancer from colonoscopy videos.

Leonard is a serial entrepreneur and has founded six successful startup companies.  His last startup, Clover, sold 500K units of hardware/software to small businesses and was acquired by First Data Corporation.  One of his earlier startups, Bix, was sold to Yahoo! in 2008.

Leonard has held various positions at eBay, Intuit, and Credit Suisse First Boston. He holds a B.S. from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).


Umair Akeel is an operating partner and chief technology officer in residence (CTO-IR) at Bessemer Venture Partners. Umair brings 15 years of experience in technology development and leadership to Bessemer, focusing on machine learning, self driving/mobility as a service, and developer tools.

Umair loves the process of building and growing products, teams and organizations, and as CTO in residence, he works closely with BVP-funded companies as an advisor. Interestingly, he’s been in their shoes before, having worked at two BVP-funded companies: he was Eloqua’s chief architect through its IPO and subsequent acquisition by Oracle (where he served as VP of product development), and earlier, he worked as a software engineer for Trigo Technologies.
