Cowells small waves on a Sunday autumn afternoon
Looking for the nice small beginner waves at at low-tide Cowells Beach. And I hope to find them Sunday October 21 from 2-4pm. (Lowest tide is about +1.4' at 3:24pm.) The south swell is decreasing and will be quite small by Sunday, so I can't be sure there will be waves, but my experience says it will be good small waves for beginner longboarding. To be sure, look at the Cowells camera around 2pm Saturday and Sunday should be slightly smaller than that (smaller swell with lower tide). If the conditions are good, it will probably be crowded. Those with some experience who want bigger waves can go to 38th Ave., Pleasure Point, or The Hook. If you need to rent, I recommend Cowell's Surf Shop. You can rent board and wetsuit all day for $35 or $40 They rent lockers for about $5 and I think they close at 5pm now. You can park in the shop lot for $20 or find a metered spot on the street. There is an $2/hour lot about 3 blocks to the North by Depot Park (the artificial turf soccer field). The parking lot takes credit cards and the meters either take credit cards or let you pay with your phone. Bring towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, and money for parking. We'll have a short safety and surfing technique lesson on the beach then we'll go into the water. I am willing to push people into waves if they want it. I have to leave about 4pm but if you're having fun you can stay later if you have your own equipment and should have good conditions until about 5pm. The weather should be decently warm until 5:30pm but since it's October, there shouldn't be too much weekend beach traffic in either direction (doesn't mean zero traffic).

    What we're about

If you are a new surfer come out an learn the fundamentals of surfing. We will be predominately be learning on long boards, so if you're a short boarder you're still welcome to join to socialize with other like minded surfers. If you need to rent gear there are shops in Santa Cruz that you can rent boards and wetsuits. We will predominately be surfing near Pleasure Point or Cowells depending on surf conditions. Your group leader will also be willing to take photos and video of your surfing adventure. Dates will be contingent upon surf conditions, but typically will be in the afternoons during the work week or in the mornings on the weekend. So come on out and learn to surf and have fun meeting other surfers that can help advance your skills.
