23868 Tecate Mission Road, Dulzura, CA
Hike up to Tecate Peak for an incredible view, and afterwards walk across the border to get tacos!
Tecate Peak is also known as Kuuchamaa (also spelled Kuchamaa, Cuchuma, and Cuchama) Mountain, and is a sacred mountain for the Kumeyaay people.
RAIN CANCELS. I will reschedule if the road is muddy.
If we get done before 2pm, we can run over and take a look at the Tecate Brewery 12 blocks from the border. Then tacos at Los Amigos Taqueria!
Distance: 6.5, but depends on where we park on the road.
Starting Elevation: about 2,650
Peak: 3,883 feet
Vertical Elevation Gain: 1,233 feet
- CASH (when we get tacos, parking at the border runs about $5, and american money is fine for getting tacos)
- Hiker's 10 essentials
CELL SERVICE: there is service on most of the mountain but in Tecate, your cell provider might charge you extra so try not to use it.
There is no trail. It is a DIRT ROAD used by border patrol. We are allowed to drive on it, but it's extremely rough, bumpy, and really should only be driven with a high-clearance and 4WD vehicle. If you drive a sedan, you won't get far and will have to hike farther. Because there is practically no place to park, I'm limiting this trip to 2-3 cars. So however many people fit in those cars I will add. Please indicate in the comments whether or not you have an appropriate car to drive people up in. I drove my Subaru Outback and it was totally fine.
Like I said; rough road, no guardrails, and deep ruts that you need 4WD to get up over. If you bring a 2WD truck I can't guarantee that you'll be able to get out of ruts going uphill if you lose momentum and have to stop because of big sharp rocks.
There is this gate, which will most likely be open. It could lock behind us but looking at the overgrowth on the left side of the fence, it looked like it hadn't been in a long time. We can talk to the BP and tell them we're hiking and hopefully they won't close it on us.
take the 94 all the way past Dulzura and head south (right) on HWY 188:
Then make a right here onto the dirt road, 1500 feet from the border entrance:
Make another immediate right on Tecate Mission Road:
Drive for a few hundred feet and to the left, park and wait here:
