Hi Jim,

I've only been to 1 meet-up but i'm involved with social circles of Nihonjin and frequent Japanese restaurants, markets, businesses, etc. I haven't seen the bastard but I will definitely keep my eyes open. Does this piece of garbage still live in the San Diego area? Hope they catch him!

This story doesn't seem to have made much of a splash in the local media, but it's very big in Japan.

In 2007, a Japanese woman living in San Diego disappeared.  Her (American) husband, when asked by neighbors about his wife, claimed she was in Hawai'i.  A body was soon discovered locally that was suspected to be hers.  A positive identification has just been made.  And of course the husband is nowhere to be found.

I have been contacted by Japanese news media asking if, perhaps, any of the people involved with this case ever came to our meetups.  None of them look familiar to me, but if you recall seeing them, please let me know.  More details at

The husband, Tony Simoneau, who lived in San Diego from 1998 to 2007 and is said to speak Japanese:

His wife, Fumiko:

This guy, who used to be a friend of Tony & Fumiko.  His name is unknown:
