What we're about

This group is designed for those who wish to develop a strong mindfulness practice in their daily lives. We do this by developing an appropriate understanding of the conditions that foster peacefulness and clarity. And most importantly, we put into practice what we’ve learned by cultivating mindful awareness in every activity.

Our group offers meditation retreats, Buddhist cultural events, meditative hikes (including regular full moon night hikes), and occasional random events that lie outside of easy description.

Although central and critical, mindfulness is but one of the eight core factors of the Buddha’s teachings. As such, our offerings come from a Theravadan Buddhist perspective and endeavor to engage participants in the necessary supports that allow mindfulness to be the gateway to clarity and contentment.

One needn’t be a Buddhist to participate in our events. With the right attitude, practice and diligence, the benefits of mindfulness can be realized by anyone.

Saturday Morning Mindfulness Retreat

American Buddhist Meditation temple

Please join us for our Saturday morning mindfulness retreat at American Buddhist Meditation Temple. Nestled in a small avocado grove near the ocean, our Thai Buddhist temple is a hidden gem in beautiful Santa Barbara.

Retreats generally start promptly at 9 am with traditional Theravadan Buddhist chanting in the Pali language. Participants are encouraged to begin their meditation as the leader offers the chant. After a short talk by one of the monks (or a lay facilitator), we will alternate 20-minute periods of sitting and walking meditation for the duration of the retreat. The final 30 minutes of the retreat may feature a group circumambulation of the temple's large Buddha statue, followed by a ceremonial offering of flowers, incense and candles to one of the Buddha statues.

No experience is necessary. Instruction is available.

*On special occasions when the main Buddha platform is not available for our retreat, we will host the retreat in a shady grove on the back side of the monastery grounds. Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure you will be able to find us.

Folks are welcome to come for the entire retreat, or just a portion of it.

As this is a monastic environment, we request that participants dress conservatively, limit talking to practical matters and matters of spiritual practice, and arrive and depart quietly.

Please park on the property of Cal-Orchid. The temple is through a pedestrian gate on the left as you enter the nursery property.

Since the temple is very close to the ocean, mornings can be quite chilly and foggy. Dress accordingly.

Although seldom an issue, there can be occasional biting insects when we practice in the shade under the trees at the back of the property. Folks might consider bringing repellent.
