Walk with the Farmer and the Cook

  • Sep 16, 2010 · 2:00 PM

This is a six week Adult Education class I teach and invite you to join me. I started the SB Food and Farm Adventures Meet Up this summer when this class was inactive. This class is all about appreciating our local seasonal food and the people who grow it. Each week we will visit a farm and walk for about 60 minutes with a farmer to learn about fruits and vegetables: how they are grown and harvested, how to cook and enjoy them as well as learn their health benefits from myself, the dietitian and cook. Participants will receive recipes and sample foods. The first week meets at the Adult Ed Schott Center to complete registration and then we will visit a local farm. The following weeks will be at the farms with car pooling recommended. I will post the farms we will visit each week but need people to register for the series of classes. Fee is $10.00 Registration begins soon at:

Since this class was part of the Walk with the Farmer series, about 35 people attended. Mark gave us a wonderful farm tour sharing information about the history of Fairview Gardens as well as the organic philsophy and practices. His story telling method is very enjoyab

Friday's farm visit at Fairview Gardens was so educational. We learned about the proper care and feeding of soil for sustainability. Gerry prepared an awesome salsa for us to taste, based on what was currently growing.

An excellent start to a promising group of visits. The class was really large but it was easy to hear the speaker. Mark presented a thoughtful discussion of sustainability versus organic. He also put the role developing community at the forefront of his goals for Fairview Gardens. I think this class is a big step in community building. Thanks Gerri.

There are 2 sessions with Adult Ed that are both open. People can register for the six week series at the first class which will be at the Schott Center either on Sept 16, Thursday at 2 or Friday Sept 17 at 4. We will visit Fairview Gardens the second hour of each initial class. A syllabus will be provided. For those Meetup members that prefer to attend individual sessions and not register for Adult Ed, there will be a fee of $5.00 per class instead of $10.00 for the six week series.

    Hi Gerri,
If the Adult Ed class is full, do we still just sign up here on MeetUp?
