***** RAIN FALLING IN THE HIKE AREA CANCELS ALL HIKES ******* Saturday June 8, 2018 - 5 Deer Trail lollipop from Artesian Springs Camp, an easier route to the Ridge and views of the Sierra Pelona area Carpool Time: Meet at 6:45 AM (details below) Hike Time: Meet at Trailhead at 8:00 AM (details below) Distance: ~ 9 Miles, Round trip (lollipop style) Gain/ Loss: 1500' Approx. (couple of steep hills early - and a few hills coming down/ back) Hiking Time: 4.5 hours Rating: Moderate ++ , for distance / effort , poles will definitely help! Description: This hike is one of my personal favorites - 100% single track/ remote dirt roads - so close to suburbia but feeling miles away to probably meet no one. It includes a 2 mile off-road driving adventure. We hike a little used mountain-bike trail, through old growth chaparral as we periodically dip into shady canyon doglegs. Starting at 3800' (2600' above Santa Clarita) with a view of the Bouquet Reservoir, Jupiter and Grass Mountains. Later, from high up on Martindale Ridge, we crest to look down on the Sierra Pelona / Vasquez Rocks/ Aqua Dulce area. If it is a cool clear day, we should be able to see all the way East to Lancaster, Palmdale and North toward Tehachapi and its windmills. Carpool from Bouquet Canyon (Best Buy) to the trailhead: !!!! DO NOT GO TO TOWSLEY!!!! Meet in the Santa Clarita Best Buy parking lot (26531 Bouquet Canyon Road ), the one with the Trader Joe's, at 7:00AM for a 7:15AM SHARP departure to the trail head. Directions (from the 5 FWY North, then East) to the Carpool spot: From the I-5 Freeway, heading North (toward Castaic), exit at Newhall Ranch Road (Route 126). After heading up the off ramp, turn East (right) along Newhall Ranch Road, toward Valencia. Go 4.4 miles on the Newhall Ranch to the intersection with Bouquet Canyon. Turn left at this light and left again at the next light into the Best Buy parking lot (26531 Bouquet Canyon Road). Meet the group in the lot between the Best Buy store entrance and Jack in the Box, to organize the carpools. The carpools will caravan at 7:15AM for 20 miles up Bouquet Canyon to Forest road 6N08 gate (on the right), just before Spunky Canyon Road. Directions from Antelope Valley/ North of Santa Clarita to 6N08 gate meeting spot: If you are driving from Lancaster, take Elizabeth Lake Road to Bouquet Canyon Road (just before Leona valley). Drive 6.4 miles on Bouquet until you see Spunky Canyon Road on the right. The 6N08 white gate is on Bouquet Canyon Road, 0.7 miles South of Spunky Canyon Rd., on the left. It is in a wide turnout with a Noticeboard and "6N08" on the gate. ALL: Be at the 6N08 gate by 7:45AM to leave with the SCV carpool group. If you do not have a high clearance vehicle and hope to carpool the last 2 miles off road, please message me ahead of time (not on the day). 2 MILES OFF-ROADING FUN TO THE TRAILHEAD!!! So....after a 30 minute drive from Santa Clarita, up curvaceous Bouquet Canyon, we kick the adrenaline up a notch and go off-road on a forest road to the trailhead at Artesian Springs camp. We plan to arrive at 7:45AM at the forest road 6N08 entrance on Bouquet Canyon, where we may need to consolidate the shuttle further before we drive off-road (2 miles East from Bouquet Canyon, along a fairly rough road). NOTE: Unless you have driven there with us before AND have a high clearance vehicle, I do not recommend driving all the way to the trailhead, on your own. Better to meet us at Best Buy in Valencia, or at the 6N08 gate. We will need enough high clearance vehicles (i.e. SUV/ pick up truck), not necessarily 4WD, otherwise everyone is going to have to get "very friendly" for 2 miles. SO.......If you have a "weekend, high clearance vehicle" and can help with this special carpool, please let me know (by messaging) ahead of time, so I can ensure we have enough space for everyone (it always seems to work out... :-) Please be respectful of your driver's support by contributing something at the end of your carpool to help defray the cost of gas - THX. Meet at the trailhead: We expect to get to the Artesian Springs campground/ trailhead, about 8:00AM and will head down the trail at 8:15AM SHARP . We should be back at Artesian Springs trailhead by 1:00PM and Best Buy by ~ 2:00PM. Dogs: Not recommended - this is a fairly narrow, chaparral constrained, single-track; there also are a lot of prickly grasses (paw ouchies) throughout this trail. Adventure Pass: Not needed BRING: Hiking Poles, lunch/snacks, at least 3L of water with some electrolytes, camera, hat and sunscreen. Wear long pants , hiking shoes/boots with good tread. Gaiters if you have them for the long grass. Check forecast and bring an extra layer (windbreaker) if it looks cooler. There are brief shady parts with small flies where a Bug Net would help, if they bug you :-). Leader: Steve I.
